Description
Redesigning/revisiting the villain from Aladdin, I wanted to have his flesh be a bit more serpentine or reptilian, but sans heavy scales initially. His skin is starting to slough off as he manifests more magic, revealing something much more sinister beneath. Was a lot of fun, got to play with some fun brushes in new ways

The suggester pretty much hits this spot-on...terrifying!
Amazing job, nice way to turn a Disney villain into the stuff of nightmares!

Me> Huh.Β That looks like Jafar.Β Oh, it is Jafar.Β He uh... he needs to trim his fingernails.
I took a good long look at this; it's a pretty crazy picture.Β Nice job.

Thank you I wanted a bit more of his inner-evil to come out in physical form..I think even if he tried to trim his nails they'd grow right back haha
Glad you enjoyed it

When I started laying in colors/textures I took a few of them and started sliding around the hue/saturation until I hit something that felt a bit evil and unpleasant; originally it was more blue but the shift to purple helped sell me on the idea of an evil-evil Jafar.
I wanted his physical form to reflect his serpentine evil more literally, so I gave him more inhuman bits of flesh, clawed hands, reptilian eyes, etc. I kind of wish I made the gems orange instead of green, though haha.

I used to only do work in graphite, I think it's something that you can tackle if you're willing to put in the time Β I like to think of it as another tool, though, something to get the job done ^_^

The very basic gist is to keep working at digital diligently and try not to get dissuaded when things don't go exactly to plan. Β I followed a few great starter tutorials (CTRLPaint.com has a few awesome ones along with a 3-brush set that works really well when you're learning) and just kept at it, putting in the hours to train my eye to look one place while my hand was off to the side; as opposed to traditional art where you're looking pretty much where your hand is contacting with the canvas.
For this piece, more step-by-step, I started off with rendering an underpainting, grayscale with some definition and edging resolved but not all of it. Β Then because it was a quicker daily-themed exercise, I grabbed a few random photos I took of clouds and sunsets and metal and selected the underpainting layer (2 layers to start, base background and the layer with just the painting on it) and did a "Paste Into" command for each photo, setting each new layer to a different blending mode and dropping the opacity to start layering in more canvas and texture.
From there I duplicated one of the texture layers and did a select-all -> delete, which keeps the layer mask but removes all the color info. Β Now I started painting in colors into that to start creating more of a feel to what shade and hue I wanted to push. Β Originally Jafar was very red/orange, which I liked, but when I shifted it to purple/blue/green then he felt more evil and sinister.
I do this a couple of times, setting up new layers, painting in over with brushes to make more texture onto the figure, then finally make a new normal layer where I do finishes and edgings at full opacity. Β I grab colors from near where I want to start putting in the finishes, lots of holding 'alt' to color grab, and painting with smaller and smaller brushes. Β
Once we're all set with cleaning up normals and edging and the colors look more or less okay, I do an Overlay and/or Hue layer with color in it and set them to low opacity (from 5%-20%, depending). Β This helps unify colors across the piece, so the purples have a tint of whatever and the greens have a tint of whatever, etc. Β It helps link all the colors on your image to one another so they're not as disparate and feel like they belong together.
That's about it Β Jafar was done in a couple hours total, that's with redrawing the underpainting from scratch, but once I had this version it fell into place really quick since I could see more easily where things were gonna go and how I wanted to render it. Β The main thing is to just put your nose to the grindstone and practice with diligence, not just busy work though but purposeful, try to learn from each piece what you can do better with your next piece, and then start work right away

I think that will always be my problem; I feel weird with my art if I don't have a physical contact to it. If you get what I mean.

It's a hurdle I had to get over but something that your brain just trains itself to do. Β Like, I've poured thousands of hours into graphite and pen/ink, so it was a bit of a challenge to undo that, but with enough time it's another arrow in the quiver, so to speak

Do you still do graphite and pen though?

cobaltplasma In reply to musicisthenewspeech [2015-03-24 10:03:57 +0000 UTC]
On rare occasion, only a tiny fraction of what I used to do, but that's partially due to time constraints. Β A fully realized graphite piece might take me anywhere from 12 to 20+ hours to do but I can do something at about that level in 2-4 hours digitally. I mainly go to pen/pencil when I wanna scribble out a superfast idea when I'm away from my computer and then I'll render it out digitally later.
There's still a strong allure, though, of traditional media that I know I'll never shake. Β But right now for my projects and timeline I need more speed I guess than indulgance heh... so until later this year I'll probably be mainly digital, just to finish up what I have on my plate

I've been drawing most of my life, but wasn't an art major until 1999 (until then I was an astronomy/business administration double major). Β Started doing some professional illustration work while in college, graduated in 2002 and just drew a lot. Β I took 6 months off and drew for literally 14 hours a day, every day. Β This really helped solidify my foundation work with graphite, I felt incredibly comfortable with it.
My issue with graphite though is that I didn't work really fast in it, I mean I guess compared to my peers I was quick but I wanted a venue that was even quicker with short prep and finishing time. Β So I started dabbling with digital as a serious medium a few years ago and have been working at it a lot since then. Β Now days I usually spend about 2-4 hours a day apart from my regular 9-to-5 job doing straight digital work, with 4-8 hours on my days off.
Each piece I do teaches me something new and different and I figure out another small piece of the puzzle on how to execute something which makes me want to do more and more and more. It's an enjoyable cycle, but I try to approach it from a vantage point of trying to figure something out rather than getting frustrated that I can't do something, which helps when things, ah, fall apart

Thanks Art is a journey, our mediums are just tools for us to express ideas, feelings, things. Β The main thing I guess is to never stop trying to refine yourself, try not to settle and get too comfortable.

IIRC, such mix would typically be considered plasma.
I'm not sure, however, other than really dark magic, what kind of energy it depicts here.
They did do a nice job with it, though!

Thank you very much I was trying to have some kind of liquid-y fire effect with a little bit of harsh edging that you get from lightning, like something more unusual and magical.
