Description A quick take on the Mesoamerican Aztec serpent god Β I've always drawn him with wings and a longer, thinner build, but had an idea for a bulkier, almost fluffier upper body sans wings.

Thanks Quetzalcoatl has always had these crazy vibrant greens in my mind, was thinking of straying from that but I'm happy I went with my original intent haha

Just whatever you do, DON'T MENTION THE TAIL, Quetzalcoatl is very sensitive about it. O.o If you get the reference I'm happy if not i'll look crazy.

I sadly do not get the reference lol

Ok, 1. I must look insane, 2. It's from a book series called Secret's of the Immortal Nicholas Flammel, Quetzalcoatl is the "person" who made Billy the Kid immortal, Billy tells Machiavelli not to mention the tail, he does it anyway. Better?

Love your artstyle! How do you do that watery, kind of fluid look?

cobaltplasma In reply to InsanityImpact [2015-04-03 22:20:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much Β It's a combination of a brush I use for smudging which creates a very feathery, somewhat random smudge effect, and moving back and forth with a fairly harder-edged brush to give some sections more crispness.

Time and harddrive space-permitting, I'll be doing a short tutorial or two on how i do it. It's nothing crazy-complex, more playing around with the Smudge tool a bit

The brush I use for smudging is an Oil Pastel Large 121 I found somewhere..if you'd like to try it out, I keep a copy of it on my webserver for download haha:

www.Denjin108.com/oilpastel121…

My settings are Smudge, Normal mode, no toggles, 94%. Play with the sizes and the strength percentages, +/-6% gives a real wide variety of interactions

I love all the colour you use
Do you grayscale first?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

cobaltplasma In reply to ZimmyRose [2015-04-03 22:18:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I've been trying to branch out with more vibrant colors for some of my works.

And yes, I usually work by doing a grayscale underpainting before moving to colors/textures. It's mostly refined, at least with the silhouette and general values, but those change up a bit as I add more onto it and then I do a fresh Normal layer over everything where I paint in finishes like edgings and cleanups.
