Description
[NOTE: This isn't complete. There are at least FOUR more parents that need to be mentioned, but I couldn't squeeze them all in here, so this will be a two-parter.]Ah, parenthood. A phenomenon that is claimed to be one of the hardest, yet one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. In Warriors, we see plenty of good parents: Goldenflower, Firestar, Sandstorm, Graystripe, Frostfur, Ferncloud, Brightheart...the list goes on. They loved their children and raised them to be respected and honorable cats for their Clans to be proud of.
Unfortunately, not all cats in the land of Warriors turned out to be good parents.
Some reasons as to why are clear, others need to be pointed out. This is what we'll be discussing today.
[The cats in the picture above will addressed from left to right.]
SPOILERS
Rainflower [from Crookedstar's Promise] - The mother of Crookedstar and Oakheart, the former mate of Shellheart. She started out as a clearly loving mother and mate, devoted to her two sons and encouraging them to believe in themselves and to try their best at everything they do. Rain actually seemed like she was going to be one of those mothers who were supportive and caring no matter what...and then Stormkit [Crookedstar's birth name] had his accident that disfigured his jaw for life.
Afterwards, Rainflower immediately became aloof and emotionally abusive towards Stormkit because "he wasn't her handsome little warrior" anymore. To add fuel to the fire, she had his name changed from Stormkit to Crookedkit because of his injury, because it "was more suitable". Rainflower would also dote over Oakkit/Oakpaw/Oakheart more and more as the two grew up because he was the "better" one.
Now, I know that in real life, some mother cats will reject their offspring if it is ill or deformed, but Rainflower came across as a bitch who's main goal was to abuse and humiliate her son because he was different. Why? Because they're are plenty of mothers and fathers in the franchise who love their kits regardless. This is why Rainflower is considered heartless and and is hated. Almost EVERYONE in this fandom hates her, including me. Kudos to Shellheart for dumping her ass and calling her out for her needless cruelty. At least Shell loved his sons unconditionally and treated them equally.
Palebird [from Tallstar's Revenge] - The mother of Tallstar, Finchkit, Wrenflight, Rabbitkit, Bristlekit, and Flykit, the mate of Sandgorse and then Woollytail.
It's been confirmed that Palebird suffered from postpartum depression [which can indeed occur in some animals], and it was made worse after her first daughter Finchkit died shortly after birth. I actually do feel a bit sorry for Palebird, because she seemed consumed by grief for the majority of the book, suffering the loss of her baby daughter, her best friend Brackenwing, and then her first mate all in a row. So yeah, I do sympathize with her a bit, because she had a lot of grief to live with.
However, at times, she did seem rather cold and neglectful towards Tallstar, especially during his apprentice and warrior days. Like I said, Pale was totally drowning in her depressive state, but even cats who are in mourning make time for their loved ones who are still alive and well. Palebird just kinda...sat around and felt sorry for herself. I don't even remember reading about her fighting or anything. She just was all gloom and doom, and rarely showed affection for her living child. She didn't display scornful behavior towards Tall like Rainflower did towards Crookedstar, but she would snap at him and spend most of her time away from him. Even when Talltail announced her was leaving the Clan, she wasn't paying attention.
However, it does get better in Palebird's case. She finds a mate in Woollytail, and has four kittens with him. After all this, she finally seems content with what all that has happened and finds some happiness, and she even tells Tallstar that she's proud of him and that she loves him. So, Palebird does get redeemed in a way, but she was just so eaten up with depression that she kind of lost her persona for awhile.
Sandgorse [also from Tallstar's Revenge] - The father of Tallstar and Finchkit, the first mate of Palebird before his death.
Sandgorse was a proud tunneler of WindClan, digging was his passion and was determined to pass the skills onto his son, Tallkit. However, Tall never held a desire to dig tunnels and spend his life underground, so he became a moor-runner apprentice instead. Sandgorse is absolutely infuriated by this, and even when his son his happy with his current occupation, he steers clear of him and even one day takes Tallpaw underground with the tunnlers, hoping to sway his mind by taking him below ground and letting him assist him and other tunnelers with a project that formed an escape route towards the river. When the tunnel floods and they all barely escape, Tallpaw is understandably traumatized and refuses to take part in the job anymore. The flooding incident is reported, and tunneling is prohibited from then on out. Sandgorse then goes all Rambo on his kid, telling Tallpaw to stay away from him. Pretty harsh, guy.
It wasn't that Sangorse wanted to vigorously live through Tallstar, but he thought of tunneling as his family tradition, and was convinced that because it was in his blood, that Tall would have a passion for it too. Sand pretty much thought digging tunnels and hidden passageways was the most important thing in the world and the biggest benefit to WindClan, but when a foolish decision of leading Sparrow, one of the visiting rouges, underground to show him the projects gets him killed, the art of tunneling is abandoned by WindClan altogether and all warriors do their duties on the moor, no longer able to go back down nor train future apprentice to do so.
Sandgorse, to me, wasn't too bad. He clearly loved Tallstar with all his heart, but he was so involved and loyal to his work that it kind of blindsided him to what was important: his son's happiness and preference of his duty in the Clan. Tallstar knew this too, as he mourned his father heavily, and showed no kind of resentment or hatred against his father; he actually spent a fair amount of time trying to make Sandgorse happy by trying to become a tunneling 'paw, and he also wondered constantly if Sandgorse even loved him anymore. Kind of sad, really, and can hit home for those who feel the same way.
The revelation that Sparrow didn't "murder" Sandgorse by leaving him to die in the collapsing and flooding tunnels proves that Sandgorse does have some redemption, as he actually encouraged the visiting cat to escape first and paying the price himself, and this fact also erases Talltail's goal to kill Sparrow in revenge. So Sandgorse wasn't a malicious guy or anything, he was just too wrapped up in his work and tried to push it on hi son out of desperation.
Lizardstripe [from Yellowfang's Secret and Secrets of The Clans]- The biological mother of Deerfoot, Tangleburr, and Runningnose, foster mother of Brokenstar, and the mate of Mudclaw.
Lizardstripe was shown to be a very snappy and sour cat from the get-go. Cynical, bitter, and unkind, Lizard never wanted to be a mother in the first place, as her pregnancy was unplanned. She was very nervous and upset that she was expecting, and not to mention she's was pretty much one of the biggest bitches in ShadowClan at the time, right next to Foxheart.
Lizardstripe was also the only nursing queen when Brokenstar was born to Yellowfang and Raggedstar. Since it is forbidden for medicine cats to have families of their own, Yellowfang hid her status as the kit's mother, letting the Clan believe that Raggedpelt was indeed Brokenkit's father, but his "mother" never spoke up or claimed him. Lizardstripe reluctantly took Brokenkit in, but she emotionally and physically abused him; yelling at him, biting him and scratching him, depriving him of milk, and letting her own biological kits bully him [in my personal headcanon, she actually encouraged the bullying]. Long story short: Lizardstripe made it very clear to Brokenkit that he was not loved or wanted. More than likely, it's what led to Brokenstar to being such a cruel, heartless tyrant.
Lizardstripe is a bad mother. That's that.
Spiderleg [from The New Prophecy arc onward]- The father of Toadstep and Rosepetal, the former mate of Daisy.
In proper words, Spiderleg had no idea why he mated with Daisy. Seriously, I'm not making it up. He never even loved her, and never wanted to have children with her. Basically, it was a one-night stand that turned out horribly wrong.
He never paid attention to Rose and Toad. He never visited them in the nursery, never played with them, hardly even acknowledged them. He was very neglectful, as he explained that he "didn't even want them" and he felt "awkward and clumsy" when they were around.
Not much to say abut him in other terms. He was just neglectful and inattentive.
Millie [from Graystripe's Adventure manga series and The Sight onward]- The mother of Briarlight, Bumblestripe, and Blossomfall, and the second mate of Graystripe.
Millie...there's a lot of yikyak about her, and be prepared: this one may be the longest. A former kittypet who met Graystripe after he was captured by Twolegs to be kept as a pet, Millie was the one who helped Gray adjust to house cat life during his relatively short stay in Twolegplace. After he bonds with her by teaching her how to hunt and fight, Millie left her own comfortable life as a kittypet to aid Graystripe in his return home to the new territories after the old forest was destroyed. During their travels, they grew closer and closer, and eventually they fall in love. After some time, they find the Clans settled by the lake and the couple join [and rejoin in Graystripe's case] ThunderClan.
A couple of books later, Millie gives birth to Graystripe's kits: Bumblekit, Briarkit, and Blossomkit. All seems fine and dandy until the kittens become apprentices, and one fateful day not long before they are due to become warriors, Briarpaw is horrendously injured when a tree falls into the camp, crushing her spine and leaving her hind legs paralyzed and useless.
Now, it is reasonable for any parent to be horrified by a child being injured, especially if the wounded child is their own. Millie had every given right to be distraught; Briar was her baby, and she was handicapped as a result of a tragic accident.
But, but, BUT.
Millie only dawdled over Briarlight and Briarlight alone. Bumble and Blossom were swept under the rug after their sister was hurt, and it was almost like they completely diminished from existence to Millie. At most, she'd either scold them over something or act all ho-hum around them, not showing much interest. I understand the it was a scary experience, but didn't she remember that Briar almost died once before the accident? She caught greencough [pneumonia] as a tiny kitten, maybe no more than two months old, and lived? If she can survive that, plus almost getting pancaked by a tree and make it through that too, wouldn't that prove to Millie she's a fighter? There are other mothers in the series who have had traumatic events involving their kits. Take Frostfur for example: she was the mother of Cinderpelt and Brightheart. One daughter had her leg broken with irreversible damage by getting hit by a car as a young apprentice, and the other had half of her face mutilated by a pack of dogs. Frostfur didn't act so hysterical and out-of-it all the time and yell at Thornclaw and Brackenfur. I'm aware that Frost was Clan-born and probably used to violence and Millie was not, but she still managed to remain calm and love her other children, and never over-coddled her injured ones.
Then there's the situation regarding Blossomfall. I've heard people hate on Blossom because she's "bratty" and is "always doing something dumb for attention". Blossomfall gets compared to Bumblestripe quite a bit, saying that if Bumble didn't care about being shrugged off, then Blossom shouldn't. Sure, Blossomfall can be a little immature from time to time, but every cat introduced has their own quirks and what they deem "acceptable behavior" from their parents. It's like that when they were small. Blossomfall was used to being pampered and fawned over by Millie, so when her mother started to ignore her, she was hurt and envious. Let's own up to it: sometimes, those feelings are unstoppable sometimes. Blossom even admitted to feel guilty for having those emotions.
One scene in Sign of The Moon, Blossomfall and Ivypool become trapped in a tunnel system. Blossom openly wonders, "Will Millie miss me if I die down here?", showing that she is very insecure on if Millie truly loves her. That doesn't sound like a brat to me, folks. She's like any real-life ignored kid: she doubts her mother's love for her, and therefore feels neglected. When Blossomfall and Ivypool successfully escape, Millie berates her daughter, saying, "You should have been hunting! You need to grow up and behave like a proper warrior!"
...
Excuse me, Mill, but you pretty much stay in the Clan to cry over Briarlight...what do you know about being a proper warrior? I don't remember ever seeing you going out to hunt for Briarlight, so what gives you the right to push your other daughter to do so, when you're the older adult and more fittingly capable? You're the mother, not the other way around.
She also states that Briar would give anything to be up and hunting for the Clan herself. That's great. She's also saying that she wouldn't have given a fuck if Blossom had died, and she's comparing her to Briarlight: the very thing she bears so much guilt over. When Brackenfur comes over to remind Millie that it's the fact that she came back safe that matters, Millie then proceeds to turn the tables and bitch at him.
I've seen plenty of people take the route in saying "Well, Blossomfall could've just stood up to her mom and not be such a baby about it." Uhh...after all those things Millie said, wouldn't you think that Blossom would've been rather insecure to open up and share her feelings? For that matter, don't you think Millie should be the mature adult and come to Blossomfall first?
I have no doubt in my mind that Millie loves her kits. She clearly and honestly does. She's not a terrible monster of a parent, but she's certainly not the best for sure. If you like her, that's totally fine. I'm just...really off with her.
Crowfeather [from The New Prophecy arc onwards] - The father of Breezepelt, Jayfeather, Hollyleaf, and Lionblaze, the former mate of Feathertail, then Leafpool, and current mate of Nightcloud.
If you read my previous analysis of his infamous love life , we all now that Crowy is a little...scrambled on the emotional side. He's hit it up with three chicks total and all of them have gone awry one way or another. Feathertail was from a different Clan, was moons older than him, and got creamed when she managed to kill a mountain lion with a stalactite; Leafpool was from a different Clan, was moons younger than him, was a medicine cat, got knocked up with his spawns, and was forced to hide all these facts only for them to be publicly revealed later; Nightcloud is possessive and clingy, also was impregnated, and had to put up with Crow's shit alongside her son.
But hey, we're not here to talk about all the she-cats this guy's tried to bang, more like how he treats his children like absolute trash!
Poor Breezepelt. I know he's a hotheaded dick, but Crowfeather is pretty much responsible for that. He verbally abuses him and other times outright ignores him, and Breeze clearly wants his father's love and acceptance, which is something he sadly doesn't get. I can understand why Nightcloud is the way she is [explained in my previous analysis], because it sure as hell isn't gonna be CROWFEATHER who tries to show his son that he is acknowledged. Breeze is a snappy motherfucker because he has to put up with his dad being a cock to him. The reason Breeze is a scum is because daddy Crow is a scum.
Regarding his kits in ThunderClan, Crowfeather's wiki page states that while he is "secretly proud" of them, he never really...does anything. After the big reveal in Sunrise thanks to Hollyleaf, Crowfeather just pretty much yells out, "I'm loyal to WindClan and only WindClan! I have no other kit besides Breezepelt, and Nightcloud is the only one I love!" or something like that. In Night Whispers, Crowfeather just watches Breezepelt as he tackles Lionblaze over a thrush that crossed the border, not trying to interfere in any way, but when Leafpool shows up to try to break up the fight, THEN he suddenly gives a damn when Breezepelt turns his blowup on her.
Only in The Last Hope does he finally show any heart towards his children. For one, when Breeze attacks Lion this time, he comes to defend Lionblaze, and Breezepelt goes on to scream that he has always hated him. Crow's response?:
"No, I haven't. Your mother led you to believe that."
Okay.
So you constantly and clearly putting him down, emotionally neglecting him, and depriving him of all fatherly love was an element Nightcloud brainwashed into him?
Whatever floats your boat, hon. He also proceeds to chase Breeze away after he tries to defend his mom.
He does show some remorse when Hollyleaf is killed too. So throw that into the batter.
I don't like Crowfeather. I don't. He's an ass and a fuckwad parent. Enough said.
Keep an eye out for part 2!
I know the background is dull, but it leads to something xD

I agree with you on all of these, especially Millie. I don't think Blossomfall is a brat at all. Who wouldn't feel hurt if their mother responded with apathy when they were ill or injured? Millie acted like she could care less when Hazeltail told her Blossomfall was ill. Plus all people need to know they are loved, even adults. I think Bumblestripe was hurting more than the books let on. There is a part in sign of the Moon, where Bumblestripe is afraid of getting in trouble with Millie because he took Briarlight out of camp. Cinderheart and Lionblaze advise him not to let her find out and Briralight lies to protect her brother. Once he figured out that his mother didn't care, he followed his father's lead and avoided her. Notice how Graystripe stop spending time around Millie after the incident in Jayfeather's den where she said that if this happened in her old home her house folk would have fixed Briarlight. Millie was totally out of line when she demeaned Blossomfall in Sign of the Moon. I don't see how some people justify that. Most people would have responded in a caring way if a family member came home hurt! I don't think Millie would have listened if Blossomfall tried to talk to her. From what we see in the books she only cares about her feelings. I don't think she even really thinks about Briarlight's feelings. Millie is older than Blossomfall and therefore needs to be the bigger cat. If anyone needs to grow up it is Millie, she needs to recognize that other cats have feelings and stop taking her grief out on everyone. In Bramblestar's Storm, she snaps at Bramblestar while he is trying to get Briarlight and the rest of the clan to safety. Not to mention how disrespectful she is to Jayfeather. I am getting fed up with her. Someone needs to tell her off.
I bugged me that Crowfeather didn't own up to his actions in the Last Hope.

Yeah, only character I like here is Palebird because she DOES redeem herself. Even before she died, Talltail was the first to know about her kits. I think that was a secret complement.
That being said, I liked Spiderleg as an apprentice.... but then he went down hill.

Yes, I agree. Not that I label any parents - fictional or not - with emotional issues as "bad" parents, but Pale did seem to isolate herself after all her losses, and eventually did come out of her funk and reconciled with her oldest kit. It was very relieving to see that!
Spiderleg seemed to be more of an awkward "I don't know what to do with these tiny things" parent than an outright "deadbeat dad". He said specifically during Daisy's confrontation with him that he felt clumsy around Rosekit and Toadkit, and avoided them because he solely didn't know how to be a father, and more than likely didn't want them to get attached should he fail to be around for them in the future [personaly headcanon of mine]. Like I stated above, I think it was a one-night stand that went wrong and he probably chickened out a bit xD
Yes, he did seem more likable as an apprentice~
