Description
The snow outside felt refreshing to Frozenkit's hot paw pads. It melted beneath her weight, and she knew from all the stories Honeyflower had told her that newleaf must be coming. She followed Blossomfur up to a big boulder in the center of the camp, feeling the warm sun on her back for the first time, but there were so many other things she wanted to explore. Where were all the other dens? Where did Squirrelstar sleep?
The boulder was nearly as tall as a young tree, and there were several cracks and scratches in it. Frozenkit supposed it was quite old, which immediately got her wondering just how it had come to arrive in a clearing full of cats.
Something was strange about all this, though. She, Blossomfur, and the younger kits were the only ones out here.
"Where are the others?" she asked.
"In their dens, most likely. Or on a patrol," mewed Blossomfur in reply. "Squirrelstar hasn't called them here yet, but she will. You'll see."
Frozenkit waited very patiently until she saw a cat climbing to the top of the boulder. She was of a deep, rich red color, and her tail was fluffy. She was tiny, but her yellow eyes sparkled with such authority that Frozenkit knew it must be Squirrelstar.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey meet under the highstone for a clan meeting!" called Squirrelstar. Her voice was small, but it rang through the air like a bird's song. Slowly, cats came from every direction.
Frozenkit stood up on her hind legs, looking for one cat in particular: her father. She hadn't seen Stormchaser for a few days, and she was beginning to worry about the tall black warrior.
"Look!" Creamkit purred, nudging her. "There's my brother!"
Forgetting all about her father, Frozenkit followed Creamkit's gaze to see a large orangey-ginger tomcat sitting next to Squirrelstar. He looked quite pleased with himself, answering cats calling up to him with a smile until Squirrelstar began to speak.
"I, Squirrelstar, leader of Rainclan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice." The whole clan fell silent. Even Creamkit had stopped fidgeting.
"He has worked hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Orangepaw, do you promise to defend and uphold the warrior code, even at the cost of your life?"
"I do," said Orangepaw excitedly.
"Then in Starclan's name," yowled Squirrelstar, "I make you a warrior. You are now known as Orangeblaze."
Yowls of approval erupted from the cats below, the loudest of all coming from Blossomfur.
That will be me someday, thought Frozenkit. I just have to work real hard.....
"And now," Squirrelstar purred, "I would like to make a new apprentice."
Frozenkit's heart beat faster and faster. She had always wanted to prove herself to her clanmates.
What she had never expected was that it would be so soon!
