I should have known, thought Frozenfire angrily. Having a voice inside my head should have told me I was different. I'm so stupid...
Frozenfire was running through the woods, carelessly flattening undergrowth and clearing huge boulders and logs in single, powerful jumps. Her whole past had been hidden from her until now. Until this moment, she'd had no idea what she was. She'd never been more angry.
She had to have someone to talk to so she could get through this, and it couldn't be Lightpool. Frozenfire knew now that she was part Dewclan, so she didn't honestly think the medicine cat was a threat to her, but she felt as though if she kept meeting Lightpool, Snakesteps would never talk to her again.
She found the golden tabby medicine cat sitting in her usual spot behind a few holly bushes.
"Look!" Frozenfire hissed. "We can't be friends anymore! It's not like we're breaking the warrior code or anything by knowing each other, but cats are talking. You're a Dewclan cat, and I'm in Rainclan. We can't be friends!"
She realized with a start that Lightpool wasn't even looking at her, but at two golden bundles lying on the ground.
"What are those?"
Lightpool looked up at Frozenfire at last, sadness in her yellow eyes.
"They're my kits. I was expecting them before I became a medicine cat, and I had them two days ago. I've been hiding them from my clan, but it's getting hard. They're noisy. I want you to take them."
Frozenfire couldn't help her jaw from dropping, amazed at the sudden turn the conversation had taken. Rainclan needed kits, she knew. The only apprentices in the den now were Minnowpaw and Creampaw. Would Rainclan be blamed again for stealing kits if she took them? No, Lightpool had said Dewclan had never seen the kits. She'd have to trust her.
"Fine," growled Frozenfire, thinking aloud. "Suppose I did take them. A cat in my clan, Fawnheart, is going to have her first litter soon. She'd take care of them, I'm sure, but you'd never get to see them again." She sighed, still hurting from the sudden surprise her mother had given her. "They'll never know that they're Dewclan cats."
"Go," meowed Lightpool, pain in her voice. "And thank you."

Frozenfire walked into the nursery, two kits dangling from her jaws, Dreamstar walking right behind her. A tan and white she-cat was laying on a bed of moss in the corner of the den. She raised her head curiously as the two cats came in. Dreamstar stepped forward.
"Fawnheart, Frozenfire found these two kits out in the woods while she was hunting, along with fox scent. We can only assume that the mother was killed and carried off by the fox, so these kits are alone. Your litter is coming soon. Do you think you could manage two more?" Fawnheart looked surprised. She stared for a moment at her belly, plump with unborn kits, then at the two golden tabbies that Frozenfire held. Her gaze softened.
"Perhaps I would have been able to refuse them, Dreamstar," Fawnheart purred, "If I hadn't seen them, but now I can't say no."
Frozenfire set the two kits down by Fawnheart's belly as Dreamstar nodded gratefully and walked away.
"You name them," mewed Fawnheart after a moment. "You found them."
Frozenfire blinked, surprised, but she nodded, studying the kits. They were both golden tabby she-cats, but one had white stripes and the other had black ones.
"Um," Frozenfire meowed. "The one with the white stripes is Lionkit, and the other is... uh... Beekit."
"Those are great names," purred Fawnheart, more to the kits than to Frozenfire. "Welcome to Rainclan, kits."
