"What a mousebrained idea!" Snakesteps yowled.
Frozenfire shook her head. She, Snakesteps, Fogstorm, Skydance, and Berryfur were gathered by the river, looking across at the territories of Dewclan and Beachclan. Frozenfire had just presented her idea, that they would go and fight, to the others.
The idea had not gone over so well. Berryfur was against it, and clearly Snakesteps was too. Skydance was for it, as was, obviously, Frozenfire. That left it up to Fogstorm to decide what to do, but he was silent.
"Fine," he growled at last. "Lead us."

Perched on the boulder that marked the Beachclan border, Frozenfire assessed the situation. She was staring right into their camp, where cats of all ages were fighting. She saw elders and kits racing from the fit Darkclan and Forestclan warriors, and she saw cats fall over, coughing in pain, only to be jumped on by another enemy.
It broke her heart.
She wailed the familiar Rainclan battle yowl, and she and her miniature clan leaped onto the sandy beach. At first all the cats were scared. Beachclan and Dewclan looked up, praying that they weren't against them. They seemed to relax when Frozenfire sprang onto her first opponent, a young longhaired gray cat.
The cat looked like an apprentice but fought like a warrior. She reared up onto her hind legs, knocking Frozenfire, who was small for her age, on the ground. The cat towered over her then, ready to slam down, when Frozenfire kicked up hard with her hind legs, sending the cat flying. She landed on her side, but got up immediately, teeth bared and claws unsheathed.
"Wolfpaw, you idiot!" snarled a voice, and Frozenfire whipped her head around to see a brown tabby she-cat with Darkclan scent. "Don't fight battles you can't win!"
The apprentice looked at Frozenfire, hatred in her amber eyes, then dashed off to find a more suitable opponent.
Frozenfire sighed in relief. Though Wolfpaw was an apprentice, she was an extremely skillful fighter. She didn't have long, though, to celebrate. The brown tabby who had spoken bowled into her side.
Frozenfire let out a yowl and whipped around, clawing at the cat's ears, until a black Beachclan apprentice came and distracted it.
"Thank you," Frozenfire meowed gratefully to the apprentice, and it nodded, its abnormally silver eyes shining.
"I'm Liquidpaw," purred the apprentice, turning around to claw at another cat.
"Mother!" cried a young-sounding voice. "Slushfur, where are you?"
Frozenfire looked directly above her to see a longhaired white kit clinging desperately onto the branch of a young but dead oak tree. Two Forestclan warriors were climbing the trunk, evil looks on their faces, and a Nightclan warrior sat underneath the kit, its jaws open wide.
Frozenfire leapt as far as she could, managing to pull the kit down from the tree by its tail.
"Flurrykit?" meowed a panicked voice, and a white Beachclan queen with piercing green eyes approached Frozenfire. Recognition sparked on her face, and she suddenly looked joyous. "Flurrykit!"
Frozenfire handed the kit over, and the queen gave her a grateful look before she dashed off to a den, the nursery, Frozenfire supposed.
The battle raged on for much too long. Frozenfire's ear stung from where a calico Forestclan cat had bit it, and she also recalled wrestling with a blue-gray tom and a ginger she-cat.
"Nightstar has fallen!" cried a voice, and another yowled, "Retreat!"
The Darkclan cats let out yowls of confusion and pain, then they melted into the shadows, too far for Frozenfire to see. For a few moments, Forestclan kept fighting until they realized they were alone. They too, retreated.
It took the cats of Beachclan and Dewclan awhile to realize what had happened, then they let out yowls of triumph, but they didn't last long.
Bodies of dead and injured were strewn all over camp, that of Nightstar among them. Frozenfire shivered, and Fogstorm walked up to her.
His head was down, his eyes cloudy. His already mangled ear was bleeding hard, but there were no other visible injuries on him. He and Frozenfire padded to the friendly silver-eyed apprentice, who was becconing to them with his tail.
"Liquidpaw," mewed Frozenfire, dipping her head. "I am grateful for what you did back there."
"It was no problem," meowed the apprentice, but he started to walk away. "Come on, a friend of mine wants to meet you."

Frozenfire's heart twisted when she saw the white warrior laying on the ground, bleeding badly.
"Frozenfire," meowed the cat. "I've heard much about you. They say you are quite a warrior."
Frozenfire was baffled by the she-cat's praise, and she had nothing to say.
"My name is Dovefeather," meowed the cat again. "I'm the leader of Beachclan now that Ashstar is gone, but I've not yet gotten my name or lives." She let out a long sigh, and the cats that were crouded around her began to whimper.
"I'm fine," mewed Dovefeather. "Honestly, I just need rest, and so do our friends of Dewclan and Rainclan. I would like to invite them to spend the night."
Frozenfire could say nothing because she was still stunned by this cat's strength. She simply nodded, and Dovefeather smiled.
Then an agonized screech split the air, not a cat preparing for battle, but a warrior in great pain.
