Description
It was discovered that he was only a pretend girl, and was thrown out of the party. Awesome quasi corset thing available at Target.Created for me by the amazingly talented Alison of Dragon's Den Unlimited. This the first full color I finished in a while so I'd like to know what you think. ( I'm about 60% on a bunch of the other ones )

So cute and sad. I like it! And I like how the blue shadowing contrasts with the warm light: captures the gloom in the midst of revelry.

Ahh yes, I know that feeling and fear shown in this art, I experience it all the time when I go out. I truly captures the fear every CD or TG person has. Being found out and made fun off and attacked or even Verbally or physically. Great art and also great coloring job. I love it. I just had to upload it on Second life to put in to my house there.

Gosh , that's an interesting picture. Somehow the emotion's very deep. The fear of discovery and rejection's universal; it'd be innacurate to say this is just about transgenderism. The scene you've set really adds to the story - going from the silvery party light to the dark evening woods. Other people have given you comments about improving your technique , and that's okay. But you'd do well to remember this type of storytelling for future illustrations you plan Nice job.

i have to say this is a rather strong peice but...some of the viewers understand that in a way that would rather not be mentioned here.
however. the artwork and coloring is brilliant. to the details of the expression to the subtle change in tones to signify ight and shade right down to the posture even the semi dishelved hair that the charector has. which leads one to ask if there is more to the story than just this one picture

Thanks. Certainly I had things in my head, but I like it when people take what they need from the picture to form their own telling. It's more personal that way...

The shine of the stockings is so nice, and the color choices in the shading are stunning and very surprising. I think this is one of your best color jobs, honestly, because of the boldness of color and the hand-painted background. I love the watery look of the eyes, and huge compliments to Alison for the provocative picture and fantastic pose. It makes me wonder what happened here, why he's so disheveled, if someone suspected something and ripped his clothes apart Cinderella-style to expose him or if an amourous drunk at the party began to flirt and discovered him upon unbuttoning the shirt... Hmm.
Anyway, I guess criticism wise the only thing I could do without here are the filter-flowers. They really stand out as obviously not fitting with the rest of the picture and I think you would have been MUCH better off painting them yourself. Other than that, the only other thing I think you could maybe work on a little bit would be the hair, since it seems instead of following the lineart it was painted as if you wre doing every hair individually which I think doesn't work quite as well as hair I have seen from you otherwise.
Otherwise, this is a really strong color piece for you and I'm glad you got some time to do it. Keep it cool

Thank you so much! In retrospect I like the flowers less and less. They just don't match with the rest of the BG. I'm still on the fence about the hair. It looks good in print, but not on screen....so I'm conflicted. I've done hair this style before and had it look great in both. How do you feel about revisiting old work? On the one hand it's like...I'm a bit better now so I could totally fix some things. Yet... the work itself caries with it the memories and emotions of the time of creation. Its a snapshot into my life, ya know. One of the things I enjoy is going through my gallery and it's almost as tangable as any family photo. Thanks for you comments Kittehness, I hope I get to see you again before you go off to Germany

the flowers seem to stand out too much on that piller- is it grey, or made of silver? I really like the hair and the upper body- really nice shading here. However, I think the red of her dress is too red, and looks too, out of the bottle, if you know what I mean, maybe dull it down a bit, and put more orange or blue? to make it closer to a tinted brown red, like we would see irl, unless of course... it's one of those plastic dresses.. I think it'd be cuter if it wasn't...

Codax In reply to SyntheticFishTattoo [2007-02-03 07:17:54 +0000 UTC]
Yeah I don't like the plasticy looking material. The red was intentional, but maybe a little to much? I kinda like it because I don't think I've ever seen that color before, but it's weird on clothing because...well...I've never seen that color before. Idea was to use red to contrast the cool colors of the rest of the scene and bring the eye to the skirt first, and unravel the scene from there. It seems to be effective, but alittle over the top? The flowers didn't go as well as I'd hoped. They were hand drawn, but cloned...moreover they don't match the rest of the style of the background. Thanks for your insights.

Good to see your still around. I love it. Great job, especially shading. The light's in the background are my only problem. They may have the light but are perfectly rowed and everything it seems dull but perfectly normal at the same time. The tree's i would have to say are my favorite part becuase the are so dark brown and with the lack of leaves they are seemingly dead. I think it adds to the unfortunate mood the place. Sad, bumming, and a why did it have to go out like this in a sense. This kind of thing happened to me a school dance once. A guy tried to grind with me and i told him, "back off, not interested." I think my voice was a dead give away, but anyway he went to grab my chest, the pig that he was, and figured it out. I teamed up with an old friend, (strangely he has an extreme dislike for people like us and our friendship had rebirthed that night), and we went back in, drug the dude out, beat him sensless (i try to stay away from violence but it had to be done) and had him look at me as i said, "you just got your butt kick by a guy in high heels." I didn't go back to the party but went home. This is my story, sorry for making the comment sooooooo loooooong. Forgot to mention, amazing job on the expression by the way, not balling tears but just as sad, i love it.

Hurray, it's good to see you're not dead! Having transgender friends, I can really relate to the story behind the picture. Big kudos to Alison for the linework. As for the coloring, you haven't lost your touch, Codax. It looks just as good as it ever was. (Since you're looking for advanced criticism, I'll continue) The shading on the character is absolutly fantastic, five stars all around there. The color choices and highlights are all exceptional. The hair looks a little gritty, but that's appropriate considering the situation. As for the background, it's great on all acounts save one. The semi-blury, un-focused style works great with the piece because it gives most of the attention to the character, and I find the lighted windows in the background an excelent touch. The only problem is with the trees which look all little rushed. The roots are good, but their uniform straightness in the trunks and lack of interest in their branches make them seem a little dull.
There's my in-depth criticism of the piece. Amazing work on the character which looks abolutly fabulous! Great work on the background as well which, aside from the odd trees (which will likely go unnoticed anyway), looks fantastic. Amazing work, Codax!

*smiles* Nah not dead yet. My current DS projects have made me a total lurker to DA, it made me happy to relax a bit and color this picture. Even though I've been trying to get better with 'painting' backgrounds sometimes it's still a bit difficult for me to get the ideas out that I like in a timely manner. I, too, feel that portions of the piece were rushed. Thanks for your advice!
