Words Below:
Maxine, formerly Max, was a client of the Junebug Talent Agency. She had her own concert even though she could not sing or play any musical instrument. For most talent agencies, helping a client fool the audience by lip synching would be enough to tarnish their reputation, perhaps even enough to force them to go out of business. For the Junebug Talent Agency, it would be buried by bigger offenses such as hypnotizing their clients, hypnotizing the audience, and poorly treating any of their clients not considered good enough to perform.
The Junebug Talent Agency had shaped Maxine to their liking. They cut and dyed her hair, gave her new outfits, and hypnotically altered her personality. She no longer looked like the Maxine who first joined them, much less the Max who had gone on a free tour of their studio. Such things were not her concern. Her only concern was giving the audience a convincing performance.
Among those in the audience was Agent Rick Violet, a member of the Agents of Freedom. He was a non-shapeshifting crossdresser with no magical powers whatsoever, but he was surprisingly resourceful. He watched the concert while carefully shielding himself from any subliminal messages they might be sending. Not only that, he sent out his own subliminal messages telling the audience to ignore what they were hearing. It was not ideal but it was better than nothing.
Violet carefully watched the entire concert and made mental notes about what he saw. He also made a secret recording for later use. As he watched Maxine, he could tell that she was lip synching. Most clients of the Junebug Talent Agency did the singing themselves. Otherwise they were not considered good enough.
This special exception made Violet curious. Why was Maxine the main attraction if she did not do the actual singing? Was it her personality, the image she created for them, or something else? He knew he had to investigate.
When the concert was over, Violet went backstage to meet Maxine. He showed the guard his backstage pass. It was forged but the guard could not tell the difference. Next he had to get past the security system. It was designed to catch shapeshifters but someone like Violet could pass by undetected.
At last Violet reached the room where he was told Maxine would be. He knocked on the door and she invited him inside. Violet scanned the room for bugs. Finding none, he felt it was safe to talk.
"That was a good performance," Violet began. "but I must ask you something."
"What do you want to know?" stammered Maxine correctly guessing "she", at least as far as Maxine knew, had discovered her lip synching.
"Are you happy with the Junebug Talent Agency?" asked Violet with genuine concern.
"No, I am not!" Maxine replied, relieved the scorn was not directed at her. "They make me do things I don't want to do. I always do them but I don't know why. Do you want me to join someone else?"
"Well yes," admitted Violet. "but not in the way you think. I am going to help you get your freedom back."
"They won't want me," cried Maxine. "I can't sing. It was all lip synching."
"I too am not as I appear," confessed Violet. "My name is Rick. I am a crossdresser."
Maxine stared at him in disbelief. He did not look at all like a crossdresser, yet when he revealed himself she knew that it was true. The two of them snuck out together. Violet carefully watched Maxine for signs of a memory wipe. There was none. She had not been with the Junebug Talent Agency long enough for the memory wipe to take effect.
Rick Violet took Maxine to the Agents of Freedom Headquarters where they would do their best to remove the effects of the hypnosis. Being the main attraction at a Junebug Talent Agency concert, Maxine would be able to give them valuable information. They just needed to use that information wisely.
