Jordan was a young shapeshifter. Originally she was male but she became female so she could get the female lead in the school play. Being a shapeshifter, she had been having an identity crisis. She did not know what she wanted to do or even who she wanted to be.

Following the advice of an older female shapeshifter, she made up her mind. She created the identity of a female student for herself, used her magic to convince everyone she had always been there, and pursued a career in acting. With her shapeshifting ability, she could make subtle changes to herself to make herself better fit whatever role was needed.

Thanks to her mental makeup skills, Jordan gained confidence over time. On stage she felt she could play any part available and do a good job at it. More importantly, off stage she felt she could handle everyday social situations without having to resort to magic.

After doing well in various school plays, Jordan decided to see if she could get a job at the theater. This was the big time. Her nervousness that she thought she had conquered returned to her. Even mental makeup was no longer doing what she needed. Making up her mind was not enough. She also needed to work at the goal she had selected for herself.

For her birthday, her parents gave Jordan a bright red dress with matching heels. It was not the kind of outfit made for everyday use. It was meant for special occasions, like going to the theatre to audition. As she waited in line, she imagined herself putting on lipstick, blush, and eye shadow. It immediately made her feel better.

Even with her shapeshifting ability, her mind could do things her body could not. Besides, Jordan knew better than to overuse her shapeshifting powers and attract unwanted attention. Not all shapeshifters were good and there were even more powerful beings out there. It was best to do what she could on her own.

Mental makeup or not, Jordan needed to accept herself unconditionally. She needed to free herself from the imaginary restraints that existed inside her mind. She imagined them as doors and opened them one by one.

The final door was locked. Jordan considered trying to break the door down but she thought this would only result in her getting hurt. She needed to be more resourceful and find a way to break the lock. Imagining a tool kit on the ground beside her, she got out the tools she needed and proceeded to work on the lock until it was broken. With the final door opened, she finally felt like her mind was at peace.

It was Jordan's turn to audition. She put her heart in the role and did her best to convince both the judges and the imaginary audience that she was the best person for the part. Days later, she discovered she had a part in the play. It was not the lead but it was a start and with everyone acting as an understudy for somebody else there was no telling what might happen.

Soon came the grand opening. Jordan was in her dressing room wearing the red dress and heels her parents gave her putting on makeup when the stagehand knocked on the door. He warned her the show would begin in five minutes. She told him she would be ready.

Jordan was pleased with herself. She had done what she set out to do. All it took was some hard work and plenty of imagination.
