Description
"As the Internet of things advances, the very notion of a clear dividing line between reality and virtual reality becomes blurred, sometimes in creative ways." - Geoff Mulgan

Words Below:
Jessie logged on to his computer and downloaded the game, Virtual Role Play from Virtual Worlds Unlimited. They had made many games in the past but this one was on a whole new level. It was not one game but many games. People would create their own simulations using the tools they had been given and others would agree to play in those simulations. Some were based on popular tabletop games, some were based on movies and TV shows, and some were based on more traditional role plays like virtual families and virtual schools.
It was one of those later simulations that Jessie decided to try out first. Perhaps one day he would try to create his own simulations but he would wait until he had more experience first. One of those simulations wanted a large virtual family and there was still a spot open. Jessie quickly accepted before someone else beat him to it.
The computer informed him that he needed to create his character. Since Jessie was new at this, he decided to create a young character to show his lack of experience. He made his character female just to be different and then slowly selected her other features one at a time. He experimented with many different hair colors, eye colors, hair styles, and clothing styles before settling on what he wanted. For height and weight he tried not to pick anything usual. He just wanted something that would make his character look good.
Next Jessie needed to give his character a personality. He wanted someone who would be energetic and fun to be around. Although he wanted his character to be someone who would light the way for others, he really did not see how he could do that when he was new. The computer took a few seconds to create the character based on the information it had been given. Then he took a few more seconds to add the data for the character into the simulation. When it was done, he was told he could start playing.
Jessie placed the virtual reality visor over his eyes. Through the visor he could see "her" body. Then he was asked if he wanted to use the optional hypnosis feature. He did not even hesitate. He wanted the full experience. It did not take long for "her" to think "she was the character he had created.
When Jessie saw "her" virtual father, mother, brothers, and sisters, "she" reacted to them as if "she" had been with them "her" entire life. They treated "her" as if they knew "her" for a lifetime as well. Although they could contact each other, Jessie had no idea who the members of "her" virtual family actually were. Likewise, they had no idea who "she" might be.
Jessie did not think this was unusual. This was the way things had been for many years. What concerned "her" at the moment was having fun times with "her" virtual family. Jessie discovered "she" could literally light the way for others. Mentally at least, the world of the mundane was left far behind.
