There was more to virtual reality than playing games or interacting with artificial intelligences. A teenage boy with a summer job in retail had the day off. He could not afford to travel so he used one of the many virtual reality programs he had available.
He selected a virtual swimming program. Due to him only paying half attention to what he was doing, his virtual body ended up being a teenage girl. He kept that form because he did not want to spend the time and effort needed to change it.
His character submerged herself in the water. He could feel what she was feeling. He even held his breath even though the security features would never let him do anything like drown.
It was a weekday morning so the virtual pool was nearly empty. It was silent but very relaxing. Some strange music started playing but he did not think much about it. Neither did he think much about the fact he had forgotten his own name.
Some bright lights appeared while he was swimming. It could not happen in actual reality. Neither could one select one's gender in actual reality.
As people got home from school, the pool became more crowded. She wondered if anyone she knew would show up. Even if they did, they would not be able to recognize her because her virtual self looked different.
Thinking about this made her feel dizzy. All she wanted to do was swim. If anyone she knew showed up, that was fine. If not, that was fine too. Sure she could virtual swim but somehow that did not feel the same.
Hours later, when the virtual program ended. He spent a few minutes trying to figure out where he was and who he was. Next time he used virtual reality, he would not be so lazy even if he was on vacation.
