Mateo was in high school when his family moved to another part of the country. No one in the family knew about the strange spells that were regularly cast in the area. For the first few days, Mateo adjusted to his new location with nothing happening that he considered too unusual. Then he headed to his new school.

Heading to a new school for the first time made Mateo feel really nervous. He felt dizzy and heard a ringing in his ears. It was as if he was entering a new reality altogether. Slowly the ringing and the dizziness faded. As he looked around, he noticed it looked more like an exclusive private school.

Mateo changed gender and became much younger. Somehow she was still unaware of the changes and thought she was still the same age and gender she had been before. A girl about his age came up to him and put a name tag around her neck. The name tag was shaped like some sort of bird. She thought it was unusual for high school but did not think much of it.

"I am a new student here," said Mateo. "Can you show me around?"

"This is high school," the girl explained. "The elementary school is next door."

"I am in high school," she replied.

Her voice sounded higher than normal. She thought it was due to nervousness and guessed that was why she had been mistaken for someone younger. Then she looked at her nametag. It said Mila. It was at the moment that Mila finally became aware that something was not right.

"Why does it say my name is Mila?" snapped Mila.

"All new students are given a name tag," said the girl without any idea of the true meaning behind the question.

Mila looked at her name tag and realized it was indeed her name. It was strange that she had forgotten it. One again she left dizzy and heard a ringing in her ears. She looked up towards the ceiling. It felt like the world itself was shaking around her and she was powerless to stop it. Then the shaking and the ringing and the dizziness subsided. Mila smiled. She decided things were going to be fine after all.

The girl who still had not given her name, introduced Mila to the other students. Her nervousness returned. She had no idea what this new school would be like for her. The teacher and the other students explained to her that magic was a regular part of events there. Mila thought she should not believe such stories but she could not deny what she felt inside her. It was like she discovered an entire new world that until that moment had been completely unknown to her.

The high school student remained as a teacher's aid. She graded papers, kept the classroom clean, and personally agreed to answer any questions Mila might have. She had many. For some of the questions she had to admit she did not know the answer but she did her best to answer all the rest. Magic was a part of their everyday life and things considered unusual in most other places might happen at any time.

When Mila returned home, she was shocked to find out what happened to her parents. One of those things considered unusual elsewhere had turned them into children too but that is another story.
