Mila had once been a boy in high school named Mateo. Then his family moved to a new location where magical events considered strange almost anywhere else were a common occurrence. Mateo became a girl in elementary school named Mila. Things became even stranger when she got home.

Her parents had turned into children even younger than she was. Mila could tell these were her parents from their physical features. She could also tell their biological sex had been changed just like hers. Finding out how and why this happened had to wait. Their priority was getting enough food to survive and they had to do it as children.

Her parents spoke like toddlers and did not remember what had happened to them nor their previous life. They were not going to be much help. Checking the refrigerator, Mila found enough food to last several days. Going through her parents' belongings she found some money they had stashed away. She still had enough of her mental functions left to go to the grocery store and buy food. They were going to be alright, at least in the short term.

If anyone discovered their situation and decided to take advantage of it, they would not be able to properly defend themselves. They needed to find the right people before the wrong people found them. As if things could not get any worse, Mila once again felt dizzy and heard a ringing in her ears. From previous experience, she knew reality was going to change again.

Eventually the ringing stopped, the dizziness faded, and Mila found herself in her home with her parents and her two younger siblings. As far as she was concerned her former parents and always been her younger siblings and the former complete strangers and always been her parents. They had prepared a meal for her in honor of her first day at school.

Mila eagerly ate her meal. Once she was done she was going to go outside and meet the other kids in her new neighborhood. Her parents looked at each other and then their three children. They too had no idea things were any different than they had been before.

The only people who did know what was going on were the people on the city planning committee. Due to a drop in the birthrate, they predicted the entire city was headed for economic collapse in a matter of decades. Fortunately for them, they had a way of solving the problem.

By setting loose the flow of magical energy, they could arrange for adults and teenagers to be suddenly transformed into children. The people in the city had been conditioned to see it as just a magical phenomenon. The fact that is usually happened to new arrivals did not phase them in the slightest.

A formerly childless couple had three children to look after and two adults and a teenager had most of their lives to live over again. The sex change that came with it was to make sure they did not live their lives the same as before. That could lead to confusion.

As far as the city planning committee was concerned, they had none nothing wrong. They had solved their future economic collapsed and increased the life expectancy of some of their citizens. They saw themselves as absolutely brilliant. Mila and her siblings were in no position to argue with them, especially considering they did not ever remember what had happened to them. Neither were their parents.
