Shawn was playing a virtual role playing game called Adventure Of A Lifetime. It was one of many games consisting of a massive world of virtual combat and a scattering of cities that were relatively safe. Safe from virtual dangers anyway. There were other dangers to worry about such as computer glitches, or worse still intentional hacking.

Shawn's character was inside one of those cities purchasing standard items he would need for his adventure. Being a male with a male character, he did not expect any problems with gender. However, one of the items he bought was a randomizer. Its purpose was to randomly alter the appearance of a character to avoid detection by an enemy.

The device was supposed to remain inactive until it was needed. Unfortunately, someone hacked the device so it was always active and did not do what it was supposed to do. Worse still, Shawn was using the optional hypnosis feature and did not know he needed to leave the virtual world right away.

Beth was one of his classmates. They were in the same guild and even exchanged email a few times. She was also playing the game and was selected as the recipient. Shawn's character became Beth's character and the computer switched her over from the character she had been playing to the new one.

Immediately Beth knew something was wrong. She disconnected herself from the virtual world, went to the keyboard, and began typing the old fashioned way to see if she could fix things. She saw the randomizer in her inventory and guessed correctly that was what caused the problem. She removed the item and made changes to her character to return it to the way it was, which was actually the way her other character was.

Still in hypnosis, Shawn was unable to leave the VRPG. When Beth changed the character's gender, it made Shawn think he had always been a girl. Changes to the outfit had a similar effect on Shawn's mind making him behave more feminine. Changes to the weapon and spell selection also had an effect in more subtle ways that were harder to understand.

Shawn saw himself, or herself, as nothing more than a character in the game. Beth was the one in control and Shawn had to obey. Being female in a female outfit meant he had to act accordingly. Shawn was being trained. One day Shawn might meet the hacker who caused this to happen. At that time, Shawn would almost certainly receive further instructions.
