Words Below:
Race Against Time was another virtual game made in the twenty-second century by Virtual Worlds Unlimited. The basic concept was fairly simple. A bomb hidden somewhere in a virtual landscape was set to go off after a certain amount of time. Using their virtual characters, the players had to discover where the bomb was located before time ran out. Every time a player pressed a certain button, a timer would appear showing the amount of time they had remaining.
To keep the game from getting boring the virtual landscape changed with every game. It could be a city, the country, a desert, the mountains, the beach, a jungle, or the arctic. The bomb could be hidden in any one of dozens of different locations. The players could select from a wide variety of human, alien, and robot characters.
Like most of their games, it had an optional hypnosis feature to let players actually feel like their character. Most players did not use the hypnosis feature in this game. Actually thinking they were someone involved in a life or death battle was not something they wanted to experience. Zephyr was one of the exceptions. He had created a human female character and wanted to give the hypnosis feature a try.
Zephyr found "herself" being in a large lecture room with the other soldiers while "her" commanding officer explained the mission. The enemy had a bomb located somewhere near the small village where their underground base was located. Once activated they would only have twenty minutes until everything around them was destroyed. Many of their soldiers would be guarding the bomb and a number of decoy locations so they had to remain alert.
"Why are they guarding the bomb if they know everything in the area is going to be destroyed?" asked Zephyr, not knowing that was only done for the game.
"They do not care about what happens to their own soldiers, only whether or not we are killed," the commanding officer replied.
When the information was finished, they were led through a tunnel leading up to the surface. Zephyr found herself on top of a small hill. "She" looked down at the village before and thought about places where the bomb might be hidden. That only lasted a few seconds. Suddenly an alarm sounded and a timer started ticking down from twenty minutes.
Zephyr had done this many times before so "she" was quite skilled with "her" weapons. She gunned down a number of enemy soldiers before they even knew what happened. As "she" explored the area "she" found a tent next to what appeared to be a campfire. The place looked empty but "she" was not taking any chances. "She" went into stealth mode and approached.
A few dead bodies were discovered inside the tent. Someone had already taken care of them. Zephyr searched the area carefully and found a map marking the location of the bomb. "She" took a picture of the map and sent it to all her teammates. It could be a decoy but it was the only lead they had thus far.
Zephyr hurried to the area. "She" gunned down several more soldiers on the way. An automatic voice warned "her" only five minutes remained. If this was a decoy, they were unlikely to reach the bomb in time. They had to send everyone and hope they had guessed right.
With the full strength of their army, the enemy was overpowered. The soldiers went through a tunnel leading to an underground base similar to their own except this one was controlled by the enemy. A soldier announced to the others that she had discovered the bomb. Zephyr hurried to the area and did what she could to help defuse the bomb.
Another automatic voice warned that only two minutes remained. With careful precision the bomb defuser cut the correct wire and the timer stopped. They had won! The bomb was ejected into deep space never to be seen again and the soldiers had a new base to control or at least pillage.
Then the game ended. Zephyr found himself back in his room. His old memories returned to him along with his new ones. It had been quite an experience. He considered trying a female alien or a robot new time but that was for later. For now he wanted to watch holograms.
