‘Are you sure this is safe?’ Her second echoed from behind her, causing Ronda to pause mid stride through the debris that littered the vault floor. ‘It doesn’t look very safe to me.’
‘It’s a vault.’ Ronda half turned to leer at the new blood, she hadn’t even bothered to learn this one’s name. ‘Nine times out of ten there is some horror or abomination lurking inside just waiting to munch the first person through the door’s face off.’

‘Oh.’

That at least seemed to shut them up. For now, always with more questions – it had been a nonstop stream from the moment she got paired with training in the newest members of the herd to present. And her head and temper were beginning to wear thin.

Checking the charge on her laser rifle she gave the energy cell a wiggle. The customized design allowed for a quick reload with the cell snapping in and out with easy access. The only problem was that if one jerked the rifle around to much the cell could slip or the battery short. Something she had never figured out how to correct for, yet.

Wiggling the cell one more time to make sure it was secure she thumbed the power on and let the rifle’s capacitors charge up as she slipped her finger over the trigger guard and flicked off the safety with her thumb.

Maybe this would be the vault.

And if it was, this could be the boon the Wild Mares needed to turn the tide.
