That she has. She has seen more than anyone should and has the scars to prove it. As for rising above her past, well... She has for the most part healed, as much as one in her position can. There are still nights though that she wakes up in a cold sweat remembering the past.

I have many, I write Care Bear stories and one of my characters, Confidence Heart Fennec, basically took a small explosive blast of psionic energy to the face to save her daughter, only to find out later that her daughter had been killed after her injury. She lost the top third of her left ear but kept her eye but lost the eyelid and tear-duct for the left eye and has to wear a mask that keeps her eye moist and lets her close the eye with a shutter so she can sleep.

That sounds like some intense fan fiction, the kind I enjoy. The best characters are the interesting one's, preferably one's with a flaw, be it physical or mental scaring as it means they have to take a different path than someone who has a fully intact mind or body. I admit that losing one's daughter would be a particularly rough blow to endure though. :C

That was the feeling I was going for, that sort of lost and forlorn feeling of dread. She still has nights where she wakes up in a cold sweat, haunted by past memories.

It is a nice feeling to have all one's digits, as only when you are missing one do you realize just how much you miss it. She is no exception, one eye, one ear, one arm, and a finger later. And that is just what people see.
I know hearing loss all to well. The left ear took the worst of it, both high and low frequencies blown out. It is great if you need to sleep, I just roll over onto the good ear, and I am sound proof. But I have to be careful with work as it gets tricky to tell what people are really saying.
