The C7 is a Canadian license-produced version of the US Colt Model 715 (M16) assault rifle. Technical data package was provided by Colt to the Canadian Government. However Canadian Diemaco reviewed the design and made over 150 changes to this weapon, before it entered production. These changes include materials and manufacturing processes. The C7 was adopted as a standard-issue infantry rifle in 1984. This weapon has been exported to Denmark, Netherlands and Norway. In 2005 Diemaco was acquired by Colt Defense and became known as Colt Canada Corporation. It is estimated that more than 200 000 of these Canadian assault rifles and its variants were produced to this day. The C7 saw action during numerous military conflicts, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The C7 is a gas operated, selective fire weapon. It is chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. At the time of its introduction the C7 could be considered as one of the best assault rifles in the world. It is a reliable, accurate and comfortable to fire weapon. Also it has an ergonomic design.

One interesting feature about this weapon is its progressive design. Its barrel is in the same axis with buttstock. So the recoil force is directed backwards, rather than upwards. This feature reduces muzzle climb and increases accuracy.

The C7 has different barrel than the M16. It is also plated with a harder chrome. It is claimed that it has 2-3 times barrel life increase over the M16A2 barrel. The C7 also has a different handguard.

The safety / fire mode selector switch is located on the left side of the receiver, above the pistol grip. It has three positions for "safe", "semi-auto" and "full-auto". A cocking handle is located at the rear of the receiver and does not reciprocate when the gun is fired. Ejection port is located on the right side.

This assault rifle is fed from 30-round capacity magazines. These comply with NATO requirements and are interchangeable with magazines of other assault rifles, such as Heckler & Koch G36, Steyr AUG, Tavor, and so on.

The C7 and improved C7A1 assault rifles have solid buttstocks. Internal design of this weapon can not be adapted for a folding stock. Alternatively a telescopic stock is used on the current C7A2 model.

A baseline weapon comes with diopter-type iron sights, built into the carrying handle. Range adjustments are made by rotating a rear knob. The front sight post is of smaller diameter than that on the M16. It no longer obscures the target at a range of 300 m and greater.

The C7 and its variants can mount a US M203 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher. It is mounted in place of the standard handguard. However the C7 has different mounting system for this grenade launcher than the M16. A bayonet can be attached.

Variants

C7A1 it is improved version with a Picatinny-type rail instead of the carrying handle. This weapon can accept a variety of scopes. It is normally used with a C79 3.4x magnification optical sight. A detachable carrying handle can still be installed.

C7A2 is a further improved version with a telescopic buttstock similar to that of the US M4 / C8 carbine. The buttstock can be adjusted to suit the shooter. This weapon comes with green furniture.

C7CT (Custom Tactical) is a designated marksman rifle. It is a more accurate version of the C7, fitted with match trigger, and weightier stock, small bipod, different pistol grip, and some other differences. This weapon can engage targets accurately up to a range of 600 m. It is usually used with sound suppressor.

C8 carbine. Essentially it is a license-produced version of the Colt M4 carbine, with improvements of the C7 assault rifle. It is used by the Canadian armed forces. Also this weapon has been exported to the United Kingdom, where it is used by special forces and military police.

C10 training version of the C7, chambered in .22 LR ammunition. It is capable only of semi-automatic fire.

Diemaco LSW (Light Support Weapon). It is a license-produced version of the Colt 750 squad automatic weapon. However over time this weapon was upgraded by Diemaco to include features such as a detachable carrying handle. It has a heavy barrel for sustained firing. This weapon has a different handguard with a built-in carrying handle and a vertical foregrip. Also it is fitted with a bipod. The Diemaco LSW has been exported to Denmark and the Netherlands.
