The Heckler & Koch HK416A7 assault rife was adopted by the German military as the G95. An initial batch of 1 745 rifles was ordered. In 2017 this weapon was tested by the German military. Deliveries were planned to begin in 2019. The G95 is used by German KSK special forces and KSM naval special commando units, where it replaced the older G36 assault rifle.

The G95 is a conventional gas-operated selective fire weapon. It is chambered for standard NATO 5.56x45 mm intermediate ammunition. Externally it somewhat resembles a US M16A4 assault rifle. This weapon is based on a modified AR-15 design, but has a different gas piston system, similar to that of the G36, which is more reliable. The new gas system significantly reduced malfunctions and increased life of parts compared to other AR-15 based designs such as the US M4 and M16. The G95 comes with a 368 mm (14.5") barrel.

A fire mode selector switch is ambidextrous. It has settings for "safe", "semi-auto" and "full-auto".

Ergonomic pistol grip also acts as a storage compartment for field stripping tool.

This assault rifle is fed from detachable 30-round capacity magazines. Magazines have clear windows. This allow to check remaining ammunition. The G95 can also accept all standard NATO 5.56 mm assault rifle magazines.

  Buttstock can be extended.

This weapon has a full-length scope rail. German KSK special forces use this rifle with an EOTech EXPS3 sight holographic sight and G33 magnifier combo. There are offset iron sight for emergency use. The iron sight has a quick release mechanism.

This weapon can mount a sound suppressor. German KSK use a B&T MARS sound suppressor. Interestingly during training a training suppressor is uses that mimics the weight and dimensions of the real one.

The G95 can also mount a 40 mm underbarrel grenade launcher.

Variants

G95A1 is a variant based on the Heckler & Koch HK416A8 for the German military. In 2021 German MoD announced that the HK416A8 assault rifle will be adopted by the German military to replace the G36. The G95A1 is similar to the G95 but has a height-adjustable shoulder support on the buttstock. Pistol grip has a steeper angle. This weapon has a shorter handguard in order to comply with the maximum weight requirement of 3.5 kg. In 2022 German government approved procurement of 118 000 G95A1 assault rifles for the German armed forces. The G95A1 will become a standard-issue infantry rifle in service with the German military.
