The Galil MAR (Micro Assault Rifle) is a compact assault rifle. It is also referred as Micro Galil. This weapon is based on the Galil AR assault rifle, but has updated design and a number of new features. This weapon was designed for army and police special forces, vehicle and artillery crews, army staff, paratroopers and other soldiers, who need a more compact weapon. This compact assault rifle was first publicly revealed in 1994. Since then it has undergone several changes. The Galil MAR is used by Nicaragua, Tanzania, and possibly some other countries.

It is a gas-operated, selective fire weapon. This compact assault rifle is chambered for a standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. The Galil MAR has dimensions comparable to that of Uzi submachine gun. However it is a much more powerful weapon with longer range and better penetration.

The Galil MAR has a completely new frame, but retains internal features of the Galil AR. It has significantly shorter barrel than the baseline Galil assault rifle. It is even more compact than the Galil SAR carbine.

The Galil MAR has a fire mode selector similar to that of the Galil AR. It is located on each side of the receiver. It has positions for "safe", "semi-auto" and "full-auto". Some weapons reportedly have additional 3-round burst firing mode. This fire mode selector is much more comfortable to use than that of the Kalashnikov assault rifles.

This weapon is fed from 35-round steel magazines. Plastic magazines were proposed as an option. This weapon is compatible with magazines of the Galil 5.56 mm assault rifles. There is an optional magazine adapter, which allows to use standard NATO (M16-type) 30-round magazines.

This compact assault rifle comes with polymer furniture. It has a side-folding tubular metal stock, which is covered by a polymer coating.

This weapon comes with simple iron sights. The sight has two range settings for firing until 300 meters and beyond 300 meters. There is an optional adapter, that allows to mount a red dot sight or a night vision sight. This weapon has an effective range of 300 meters.

The Galil MAR can reportedly mount a sound suppressor.

Variants

Galil MAR Model 699 is an updated version with an optional left-side charging handle. It has a Picatinny-type accessory rail under the foregrip.

MAGAL is a redesigned version of the Galil MAR, chambered in 7.62x33 mm (.30 Carbine) cartridge. Israel had used this ammunition since the World War II era. Main advantage of the 7.62x33 mm round over the standard 5.56x45 is minimized over-penetration in urban areas. This weapon uses 15- and 30-round magazines. I Around 1 000 of MAGALs were produced and delivered to Israeli Police Forces between 1999 and 2000. However it appeared that the MAGAL had a number of reliability issues. These were caused due to its very short barrel, which produced insufficient gas pressure for reliable action. Furthermore the barrel overheated during continuous firing. Initially it was planned that the Israeli police will order more of these weapons, however further orders were suspended due to these reliability issues. In 2001 reportedly 555 MAGALs were exported to Brazil, where these were used by Brazilian Military Police.

IWI ACE 21 is a next-generation version of the Galil MAR. This weapon has some modifications and uses new materials in its construction. As a result it is lighter and more accurate than the original Galil MAR.
