Description
Doing some tutorial following and experimenting in Blender. I haven't used this software since back when it was so buggy it crashed everytime you added a new mesh. It seems to have come a long way since thenGo here for the tutorial → [link]
It's interesting to discover, but basically the subdivide-surface modifier is god.
As far as my personal experimentation is concerned, I was mostly focusing on render settings. Working with the Cycles renderer is exciting as it seems to produce really stunning results right out of the box.
Render Stats

Dunno. The shadows kept ending up looking grainy even at 1000 samples, so I up-ed the samples to a ridiculous amount and let it run while I slept. I took a look at some of your stuff but the highest sampling I saw was 1000, which didn't seem to work for me. What would you suggest?

well if you are doing the render at 1920x1080 you can zoom in on the image to 100% and if you can still see the speckels I would sugest turning it up by 200 to 500 at a time and just look at the results as it goes you dont have to re render the full thing. it doesn't help that your computer is pretty slow but with blender thats not as much of a factor. another thing you can try to get rid of that grainyness is to turn on no caustics in the render options that helps sometimes. good luck and hopefully you will never think you need 10000 samples again

Thanks for the tips! At the time I just didn't care much about how long it took because I wasn't really waiting for it. I tried another render today (which I'll be posting shortly) at 1000 samples. It still displayed graininess when viewed in Blender, but when viewed externally it looked fine. I think it might just be an issue with displaying the render result internally in Blender. *shrugs*

there are plenty of tutorials to get you started i was lucky enough to know someone who has been doing it since blender came out.

Ah yes lucky. I wish I had stuck it out with Blender from back when it was first being developed. Instead, I picked up some experience in 3DS MAX and MAYA, but didn't do much of anything complex. Then I got consumed by Flash animation. Blender is looking to be exceptionally powerful, but it's UI is nowhere near intuitive, so I'm mainly using the tutorials to overcome that particular learning curve.

the learning curve is much shorter in my opinion i have 3DS max but i dont use it because I have no reason to because blender can do every thing I need it too I dont have to pay extra to get a better renderer or a smoke simulator, and I prefer the controls and ui in blender.

Without a doubt Blender's controls and UI are better, but I was able to pick up a lot of 3DS MAX by just fooling around with it. Blender just has a steeper learning curve in my opinion is all. Time will tell if steeper makes it shorter

yeah for my freshman year in highschool. im still and high school so I probably wont learn about more complex programs till I go to an art school and by then they may be teaching blender its getting to be just as powerful as 3ds max and maya.
