Okay, well... I'd say the most important thing to cover is the background, which needs to be a different color. It can't be black, otherwise the outline of the sprite disappears. Another thing is the shading on his shirt, like GamerJohn said (the dark blue spot is supposed to be shiny, and the edges should be darker than the rest of the shirt). Also, his belly isn't colored in properly on the third sprite. Other than that though, you did a pretty good job, especially with this being your first try.

Unfortuantely when I tried it, the background became back for some reason. I'm not sure why it did that to me.

Hmm... the normal background is transparent, so I guess the program you were using automatically filled it in with black.

That's odd, when I used to use Microsoft paint it would fill transparency with white... Don't worry about that I guess, I'll fix it for you.
