Of course it's the way to think, most people probably think like that . If you don't think yours were better, you did a bad job of looking through the store .

I'm not saying they didn't deserve it though, they're good collections.

One of the things submissions were based on was how well the pictures went together, and color is a big part of that. Especially to the judges apparantly .

There was a lot of entries to choose from, I think they should have taken more time to go through it carefully. I certainly would prefer to wait a bit longer to reach a more thought out choice of winners...

In my opinion, the winners were chosen way too quickly for how many entries there were... there's no way that each entry got it's own time and attention to be judged. Only one of the winners has a description of their theme, whereas it was my understanding that each entry should have "A quick description of your theme in your comment." I think that most of these winners were based by color, and not by originality or theme - it's disappointing, but I feel like the entries were skimmed through by which ones were color coordinated the best, and not much thought was given to anything else.

Regardless, the artists are amazing I just didn't feel as though the contest itself lived up to the "originality" it was claiming to judge by.

I agree; there seems to be a common theme among the winners, of art that matches one's home color scehme or something. Each set looks like something to decorate with, not enjoy because of the art itself, not that the art isn't good, but the themes are boring.

I don't agree with you. I made a couple entrees and I didn't win and I think these winners where chosen well. Just by looking at them, one theme seems to be golden, one is about umbrellas, one is about sepia toned pictures of alley ways, another is black and whites (possibly all in paris), and the last I'm not sure how to explain but the same bright colors are used with the black serving as the background. So these themes are not all the same. The colors may be similar in some but they where asked to pick a theme and that's part of how they chose their theme. And as to enjoying the art... Would you enjoy a framed piece of art by putting in the closet or by hanging it on the wall? I would rather hang my art on the wall so I can "enjoy" looking at it everyday.

 I understand your point. B&W seems a reasonable theme, but somewhat unimaginative, especially when also considering "golden", sepia, umbrellas, or skies with the exact same colors. Yeah, each them was different, but very little thought or imagination seems to have gone into the themes that were chosen. There were themes people posted that had to do with the story told, or life out of the ordinary, or emotions, or lifestyles, out-of-the-way places, and fantasy, watercolors and oils, and detailed sketches, etc. - things that took some thought and searching. It's not that the themes chosen weren't themes, but many people wish that a few more imaginative themes could have been included, especially other than mostly photos.

Sure, there where more imaginative themes but that doesn't mean the art submitted was cohesive and displayed the theme properly. And not all the winners' selections are photos. Nine of them are photographs, three are paintings, and three are digital art prints.

As I mentioned in another post, I think the judges messed up in not displaying the themes along with the winners and their chosen artwork.  The theme for the black and white selection, for example, is "A Lot of Loneliness."  I'm sure that one took some thought and searching.  I agree that it's disappointing there are no fantasy or surreal pieces, and the selections are dominated by photography.

If you click their names in the article you can see the original posts and what the themes were. They're all a little more specific than just color, but I'm still disappointed there's no fantasy or scifi in the winners. So many of these are photographs. Judges should've picked some more variety.

I personally agree with all save for the last one. Its theme is too far removed. Tea has little to do with wheat & the girl just doesn't really match. The only solid connection is the golden theme & even then the light in the wheat was too weak. Or is it literally because they all had the world "Golden" in it?

The last one, at first glance, was my favorite (It's now tied with Melikiba's, once I learned the themes).  Even before I found the themes, I knew there was something symbolic tying them all together.  The morning light is shining on the tea, the girl and the wheat, and they all glow golden.  It reminds me of a country morning, which seems suitable for Lunai's theme of "Morning glow".  I suppose I'm also rebellious, and like that each photo is quite different from the others, but they all work together well, since they're tied together with style and (for the most part) color.

Through your description, I can see a bit of how you see it. The main thing I need to remember is how the contestant saw it. To them, it hopefully was a perfect theme that they could enjoy. The fact they won one of the slots/entries is great, now they get to enjoy those paintings in full, in their own home.^^

It says on the original comment that the theme is "morning glow." So the tea and the girl fit with that, but I don't really think the wheat does. What does wheat have to do with morning? Or glow? Or both? I suspect she did just search for the word "golden" and pick some.

Morning glow was on her comment or the contest itself? (I didn't compete, so didn't look too deeply into the rules.)

But yeah, I've never heard of anyone brewing wheat tea. Wheat grass shots, yes - but that's green.. Maybe if there were some golden bran muffins beside the teapot, sure. As for the girl in the third pic, sure she's standing in the sun, but the ground looks all crushed/ragged. That doesn't fit the calming feeling of the tea being poured, nor the upright & crisp wheat in the second picture. Theme-wise, they all clash.

I too think that dA member just went with a simple colour theme. I suspect anyone who isn't colourblind should see that the 'golden' colour tones & values don't even match. But then I find dA contests are like a lottery system, if you will. So whatever, I guess. She had good luck there.

It wasn't about wheat tea My theme was 'morning glow' and not just golden colors (even though they all have golden in their names). Originally I wrote a description with my theme but I deleted it before submitting. Every one of those pieces means something to me. The wheat field used to be where me and my little brother would play in the mornings after breakfast and watching that photo brings back really good memories. When I was older I would take morning walks with my mom, and now that I live by myself, I enjoy my morning tea (hmm... Maybe I should have put them in a different order). Anyway, to me these images all represent that feeling of basking in sunlight and I'm glad I'll get to put these on my wall

It's nice to know the backstory to your selection. I think that really matters most. One person's 'clash' is most certainly another person's theme when there's memories associated with it.^^
