Hehe, I remember this dvd from Digital Tutors it had some neat techniques with splines I didn't know before.

The main thing is adding correct reflections to your materials, as not many objects are pure matte except walls and rugs, otherwise it will look very flat overall. The tracklight material is a good example of this. It stands out from the rest in terms of quality.
If you could balance the lighting a bit and tweak other materials to the quality of the one on the tracklight, you could get great results.

"Not many objects are pure matte"

Thanks for that piece of knowledge man! I'll keep that in mind.

Yeah, I'm quite new to manipulating lights & still on the track of learning how to use it well. When I made this, I just wanted it to be illuminated and threw some lights wherever. Heh heh.

Uh huh, that piece is from Digital Tutors.
The design isn't entirely mine except for the materials & the colors.

Hey, topic change.
Which do you prefer using, when adding volume to your splines: loft or sweep?

Lighting is what took me the longest to figure out. I'm still not quite there when it comes to realism, but slowly moving forward. It'd help if I wasn't lazy as hell

I prefer sweep because I get to keep my original spline directly under the modifier for easy tweaking. But then again I do far more box modeling than splines, so I can't really give a definitive answer for that. Usually I've managed fine with the extrude modifier or rendering in viewport and then converting to editable poly. I tend to use stuff depending on the situation over sticking to one single thing. Sweep is amazing though.

Well, lightings on your work are mighty fine.
I have a longer way to travel when it comes to manipulating it close to perfection.

Yeah, sweep is quite flexible, but, I've noticed that you'd get some funny-wrinkly surface with sweep that you won't get with lofting.
[Have you ever noticed that?]
But, you're right. You just can't stick with one and use it in every situation.

Never encountered that honestly, would need a screenshot. Add me on msn if you use it. The address is the same as the mailing one on my profile. I don't want to spam your work comments with a whole conversation of messages

Haha, alright.
Don't have an MSN, but I'll create one.

Panda. Out of this whole picture, I noticed the Panda first. . . >_< Wow! But, aside from the cute, amazing Panda- This is wonderful. Lots of depth, attention drawers, and plenty of contrast. I think this was a very nice piece. What would be totally epic and funny is if a mural of this picture was put up in a smaller room to make it look bigger. It it was done just right someone might actually think it was part of the orginal room and real XD It'd be hilrious to watch them try and walk into it.

This as a mural for a smaller room?

Wow! Now there's an idea.

And yeah, it'd be funny to see someone thinking it is real to the point of trying to walk into it.

Yeah, I can see me being that person XD And with the right person to make the mural you could span it across one and a half walls and make it look real. It's be hard, but defiantly intresting to see. If I knew how, I'd try my hand at it.
