Description
Humans are not well suited for work in space. Duh. We need air, we need food, and water, and we can only work at a single difficult temperature. Not to mention that our legs are next to useless up there, so we really only have 2 working limbs. These robots pick up the slack where humans leave it. Using pads on their 5 legs, they are able to crawl along the outside and inside of spacecraft easily and safely. If they use 4 legs for walking, and step with only one at a time, they can maintain a stable tripod stance at all times, while still having their fifth claw free to carry cargo. When standing still, their tripod stance leaves two claws free for working; an adequate number for most tasks. They are able to be equipped with a number of tools, and are pre-programmed with a library of maintenance functions. So, yeah. Robots and spaceships- two of my favorite things.
Two such units are shown here, working alongside an astronaut. Since humans are more versatile, and faster than robots, the machines fall into a support role when they're around.
