I have no possible clue how hyperdrive works in either the Metroid or Alien canons, so I just stole some ideas and smashed them together.

The physical shipboard mechanism is vaguely plagiarized from Star Trek. I don't think it's canon anymore, but at one point they said that the warp field is created by an energy exchange between the nacelles, which is why the hull never passes between them. Here the 'nacelles' are retractable rods of exotic matter, which were visible in stowed configuration back on page 61.

The actual visual effect, however, is plagiarized directly from Lilo and Stitch, since Lilo and Stitch did it better and cooler than anyone else has before or since.

Once we actually get into hyperspace, that's plagiarized slightly from WH40k, but it's pretty dark so it's hard to see.
