This was instructional AND homoerotic.

But mostly instructional. Kudos.

It's "etc" for "et cetera", not "ect" as you wrote it Nice tutorial.

I think I learned more from these tutorials than in a semester of anatomy classes. Course, it would help if I didn't keep falling asleep. Thanks for the manbucket!

Great guide. I can't count the number of times I've run into artists who seem to have stamped out their characters' abs on an assembly line.

A couple minor quibbles though. Doing lots of crunches gets you basically nowhere towards getting defined abs, since you can't spot reduce the fat. Also, waist circumference correlates to core body strength less than you'd think. Without getting into the details too much, my own waist is very narrow, but I have better core body strength, not just in proportional but absolute terms, than any other athlete at my college.

It's more confronting people who write characters who are in shape because they climb buildings or work on a farm, then draw them with the physique of a Venice Beach Space Marine. You don't typically get cut like that by accident, you've gotta go through some kinda Rocky IV training montage. And the thick waist is more in regards specifically to "bodybuilders" VS "Strongmen". There are a surprising number of people out there who think the guys you see in strongman competitions are out of shape because they have a lot of fat packed onto them, and don't realize that the sculpting bodybuilders aim for does not automatically denote a higher tier of wellness and real strength. I'm not saying that only guys with thick bodies have that core strength, as I specifically reference people who do have fairly narrow builds, like Jason Statham. Just that when you see a body that's built up to be very top heavy with the large lats and pectorals that overshadow the rest of the body it's usually more for the aesthetic than for real function. Like the body Schwarzenegger Conan had VS the body Gerard Butler Leonidas had. The training regiment they gave Gerard Butler for that role was specifically designed to give him a lean, compact look because Hollywood is falling out of love with the So Cal bodybuilder thing and going more for scrappy street fighter physiques these days.

as I am currently doing concept art for a class, this is perfectly timed! Thank you for your visuals and explanations. I've never been good at drawing men (I find women easier since I am one and have endless reference via nudes online)

finding male nudes is a chore and a half! thanks!

you should do a female tutorial. with thin and thick women.
because.. i'm a female, but i still can't master drawing the body :/

Coelasquid In reply to xSabotage [2009-10-21 23:12:21 +0000 UTC]

I don't draw women nearly often enough to feel comfortable doing one on them. I try not to give advice unless I've done something a million billion times over.

It's nice to see someone point out the difference between "strength" for show and the real thing, body-wise. Tends to go unnoticed too often, as far as I'm concerned. A definite favorite, and very useful. Thank you!

Woah..... This is extremely helpful! I didn't really think about body shapes that much when designing them.... I'm going to have to re-evaluate them now, not to mention do a helluva lot more research than I had before.

But as I said this is incredibly helpful! You're awesome for making this!
