Description As I was flipping back and forth between finished product and both sketch stages, I thought "Wow.  What even happened?  This looks almost entirely different from the sketch!!"  ...and then I got an idea--an awful idea--a wonderful, awful idea.

*I was actually planning on dropping a real tutorial, but some of the actual steps for this drawing were "completely paint over the sketch with the face," "Paint a new face over the face," and finally "Paint the correct face over that face."

Teaching is pretty different from learning and often you learn to do things without knowing exactly WHY
All these brushstrokes you do almost unconsciously are impossible to transfer through a tutorial, which is why a lot of them look like they skip vital points.

Sometimes people ask me to do tutorials on stuff but gawd I'm nowhere near where I want to be in art and if I taught others how to paint like me I'd be teaching them all my errors and inefficiencies.

I've been giving it some thought and I realized that 90% of my drawing process is "Wait... wait that doesn't look right..." and "Yeah! I think that looks fine.  I'll leave it like that."  I can't even do a progress gif because each layer is just a cover-up of the mess I painted before.

If I ever do a tutorial though, it will definitely have more than three steps... and it will be when I actually start painting in an efficient way.

I think it would be really cool for ya to show how you use layers since that process seems pretty alien to me
I paint stuff on one layer, with different objects having their own layers. Never knew if that was good form or not since it just came about.

Prepare for take-off 'cause not even I know what's happening.

(not same picture but heck it)

[I use layers mostly as checkpoints so I don't fear making bold changes--I always have something to fall back on.  Also, when I'm discouraged during a painting, I can also go back a couple layers and see how much progress I've made since then.  Aside from that, I use Multiply, Overlay, and Darker Color layers to aid with lighting and shading.]

(the progress gif for this picture.  Much easier to follow.)

They're fun and useful tools but can become crutches----user beware.

I think that even if you end up straying away from the original sketch, communicating why that change was made could also be helpful so other people can understand it. `o`

Yeah this is about as useful as some Photoshop painting Tuts. They never go into the specifics. Like how certain effects were created. What tools, What brush settings, Including opticy.

This was very helpful. I am now on my way to being the next Michelangelo.

It really gives me hope knowing that step 1 is far past my artistic skill.

If you could break that into Step 0.1, Step 0.2, Step 0.3, and so on, then I may have a chance to draw Astroboy.

Step 4: Look at step three and compare your drawing to the one above and see yours is just crap

How to draw an owl:
Step 1 - draw a line
Step 2 - draw a circle
Step 3 - get a new piece of paper and just draw an owl
