(if there is a huge issue with them being critters and not humans I'll alter this to make them human but it's just for a lesson so it's really not a huge deal now is it? That thing in the upper right corner is the bottom of a tree trunk :S)
Since a coloring tutorial (meaning atmosphere and color choices and all that) that I was writing became way too long, I'll put this here as a hands on learning experiment. AKA I wish I had been an art teacher.
The idea here is for this to get colored in a way that fits emotion and is harmonic (is that the correct word to use?).
Here is the idea I want you to convey:
Temperate Autumn morning, about 8ish am. (think about how the sun throws shadows down at 8am while doing this)
Mood is somewhat melancholy as he's leaving soon for schooling. Melancholy but these two are close friends, nothing more than friends, so I don't think romantic colors would work accurately... but that's up to you. Clothing colors are up to you as you can use those to your advantage to convey mood when it comes to coloring.
Tips I would keep in mind: Saturation of colors, color choices/schemes that are 'sad', dominating colors and accent colors. I'd also hint that dead tree twigs and dead leaves add to a sad picture but that's just my opinion and you don't have to draw them in but that's bonus points if you put in effort to a background.

Color pallette is there as well. Unless you feel like making them green or whatever. Whateva! It's your learnings!
This is not a contest or a race! Link your image to me and I'll come around and let you know if you've conveyed such a mood/atmosphere. If not I'll smack you upside the head with a newspaper and make you redo it.

Is that his hand at the top, between their heads? I'm slightly confused by that.

The creep in me wants to reply with "No it's a severed hand which crawled it's way into the image" but yes, it's his hand

If this goes over well I might do something else with just landscape and houses.

hmmmmm..... that would help a lot of people I am sure, because I tend to see complaints about backgrounds.

Don't worry about speed, too many worry about speed and it's more about time put into it.

You should put a watermark on it somewhere... people are notorious for stealing here
but its pretty awesome

I know, but a watermark on it would wreck the whole lesson thing :/

you could put something under the chars feet or something just like a signature or something small like that

just saying... lots of people steal free line art and say its their own... don't want that to happen to you cb your arts too amazing, even if your chars don't have tails :3

I will pound them if they pass it as their own. Then I will string them up by their hair and spray paint them with scarlett "A"s so people know they are assholes.
