Description I made this specifically to test if I've still got the skill. It still really blows.

NOT FOR USE ANYWHERE!
The people I borrowed the pics from were nice enough to let me use them. I don't want to ruin that trust.

well, well, look who's back in business!
and don't be so harsh on yourself; i've seen much worse pics passed as "pro"!

'bout the picture, i think it looks pretty cool. the setting and the horse match very well, and the shadow is well placed and very well made (it could be a little darker near the hind feet). it's a bit sad that the horse's black head and tail happen to be over a darker area of the background, but you probably didn't have much choice about that.

the mane and tail are pretty well done (from scratch? it's a bit hard to tell without the original pic), and just lack a bit of contrast - perhaps a few strokes with a spattered-shape burn tool would fix it. you might also want to add a little shadow on the horse, at the spots where you've extended the mane.

the feathers also look alright. they could use a bit more "movement" (it's hard to get with a mouse, i know...), but they're pretty good!

so yeah, don't give up just yet, i think you're getting the hang of this!

You should see what I used to pass as pro. Geeze I was a noob.

As for the fixes, if I have time I'll see what I can do. That thing took me nearly all day. By the time I got to the shadow I was just hurrying so that I could finish the dang thing.

The mane, tail and feathering are about 50% original. I used base colours for them, then I smudged out the ends to make up for the parts I cut off. That's why the feathering looks so much better then my first practice manip.

we're always improving... even when we think we're pretty good already!

don't worry too much about that, it was good practice anyway. just keep in mind what you've learned to make it even better next time.

true, it helps to have good stock to start with. it's part of a good photomanipulator's job to choose the best pics to work from, in order to have the least amount of trouble.

Oh and how much we need to lick the boots of the stock photographer to get those quality shots.

oh, i know the feeling! it's funny, the best stock is always off-reach! one has to ask and beg and crawl to get their hands on it...
