Description
'"Let us prevent the second discharge," said Enjolras. And, lowering his rifle, he took aim at the captain of the gun, who, at that moment, was bearing down on the breach of his gun and rectifying and definitely fixing its pointing.
The captain of the piece was a handsome sergeant of artillery, very young, blond, with a very gentle face, and the intelligent air peculiar to that predestined and redoubtable weapon which, by dint of perfecting itself in horror, must end in killing war.
Combeferre, who was standing beside Enjolras, scrutinized this young man.
"What a pity!" said Combeferre. "What hideous things these butcheries are! Come, when there are no more kings, there will be no more war. Enjolras, you are taking aim at that sergeant, you are not looking at him. Fancy, he is a charming young man; he is intrepid; it is evident that he is thoughtful; those young artillery-men are very well educated; he has a father, a mother, a family; he is probably in love; he is not more than five and twenty at the most; he might be your brother."
"He is," said Enjolras.
"Yes," replied Combeferre, "he is mine too. Well, let us not kill him."
"Let me alone. It must be done."
And a tear trickled slowly down Enjolras' marble cheek.
At the same moment, he pressed the trigger of his rifle. The flame leaped forth. The artillery-man turned round twice, his arms extended in front of him, his head uplifted, as though for breath, then he fell with his side on the gun, and lay there motionless. They could see his back, from the centre of which there flowed directly a stream of blood. The ball had traversed his breast from side to side. He was dead.' - Les Miserables
Haven't uploaded one of my work scribbles for an age! (a sure-fire sign I found myself at work with a pen and paper in front of me and in desperate need of distraction). I like this idea, but not my execution of it. I'm rotten at right facing profiles. So decided to do Enjolras facing right. To - um - teach myself a lesson. Or something. I'll do it again in pencil, I think.
Am more amused than anything else by Enjolras' Emo Tear moment.

It's wonderful!!! Wait a second though, was the captain guy actually Enjolras's brother? Like biologically? or just metaphorically?

Metaphorically. Enjolras regards all men as his brothers - the text says that he is his father's only child. There was a scene Hugo wrote but did not include in which criminals attend a meeting the Amis hold at an abandoned quarry, offering their help at the barricades - Enjolras says to them that they are his brothers, but not his friends.

This is my favorite Enjolras scene. "And a tear rolled slowly down Enjolras' marble cheek" hit me right in the gut, and I had a little tear of my own, I must admit...
The crosshatching is *incredible*. The detail on the carbine is to die for! Awesome.

Thank you Haven't done any pen stuff for a while...I should doodle more at work (well, I doodle all the time, but it's inextricably wrapped up in my notes!).

The shading on Enjy's sleeves is ridiculously impressive. (Actually all of it is, but that is especially so.)

Yay that it worked! I'll probably do a few more of these pen sketches, as they're so easy to do in odd free moments at work (when I have odd free moments). My neighbour as a kiddie was an art restorer and he had an etching press - he taught me some etching techniques, and I suppose that has influenced my pen sketches and cross hatching.

I...love this very symbolic scene. (Have you seen it in the anime? He has such beautiful tears!) Anyway, I think you captured the mood very well here, mlle MASTER OF CROSSHATCHING, I like how Combeferre looks worried there.

I should to more crosshatching...it's a way to sneak in sketching at work with a minimum of equipment!
I did see the anime version...very pretty. And then Jean Valjean had to go ruin Enjolras' emo moment! You know I adore him, but I think the tear-down-marble-cheek bit was overkill. He should have stopped with "He could be your brother" / "He is."

It is a great scene...and of course, it has its repercussions (although I don't think the National Guard would have spared Enjolras if he'd either lied about shooting the captain or if he really hadn't shot him...and he wouldn't have wanted them to spare him.)
