Description Time to get our Revolution on!

Jean Paul Marat 1743 - 1793 [link]

Though he's best known for getting stabbed to death in the bathtub by a young lady from Caen, Marat is very cool in his own right. While guys like Robespierre, Danton, and Desmoulins were at the forefront of the French Revolution, Marat was always there in the background, tirelessly publishing his influential journal, L'Ami du Peuple, and constantly seeking an end to the plight of the Parisian poor. For an intelligent, EXTREMELY well-written biography, I absolutely recommend Jean Paul Marat: Tribune of the French Revolution by Clifford D. Conner. He wasn't terribly popular with his colleagues during the Revolution, given his skin disease, his total lack of filter, his intense radicalism, and his uncanny ability to know everything about everyone at any given time.

This costume has been in the works for some eleven years. I first came across Marat during the French Revolution unit in Grade 11 Social Studies and he has been stuck in my brain on and off ever since. I have wanted to make his outfit from this particular engraving for the same amount of time: [link] I mean, just look at that badass! Doing his thing with his pistol and his cheekbones, looking all cool...

The jacket is a 1790s cut, made of a flannel wool, interfaced, and lined with a striped cotton. The shirt underneath is a white cotton and hand-sewn (because you don't feel legit otherwise), the tricoleur sash is made from a variety of questionable fabrics from the bargain bin, and the breeches are microsuede. Close observers will notice that's a British Light Dragoon pistol - sure, it's British but Marat lived in England for ten years of his pre-Revolution life as a well-respected doctor and scientist so there's no reason he couldn't have picked it up then.

This was an interesting project since I not only had to fit these clothes correctly but also had to keep in mind how they would look when worn improperly (breeches garters not done up, shirt untucked, hosen falling down, etc) For detailed construction notes, take a squint at my project log entries:

Oh this is marvellous!!! I Love Jean-Paul Marat!!! Can I ask you If your costume is similiar to Antonin Artaud's one in Napoleon by Abel Gance?

Hey, thanks! Glad you like it! Isn't he terrific? You know, I couldn't tell you if it's similar to the one in Gance's film because I've never seen it. (Though I should...) This particular one is based off of this etching: paintingandframe.com/uploadpic…

Oh, there sure is! Not French revolutionaries, but revolutionaries all the same. 'Vox Populi' they're called. Have a bit of a red theme going on. Lots of amazing art in the game to draw from.

And hey, don't mention it! Facebook -is- a nice platform. I would create a page, but I haven't got nearly the amount of material to post that you have.

lasfkjas *fangasms over your FB page* SO many great WIPs there and photos and augh! Your stuff is srsly the most unique, well referenced, and vivid costumery on DA. The movie bizz needs to hire you like mad. Ever thought of going into it? Costume design for film or stage? Brilliant piece, this! Digging the shoes I see there too xD It completes the look

Aw, jeez, thanks friend! That's a massive compliment. You know, I've thought about it quite a few times. I think I'm going to join the local union this spring and see if I can get the proverbial foot-in-the-door - just to change things up a bit!

The shoes were a tonne of fun to make, actually.
