Haha, cool! xD I actually do endurance in real life, with my Arab/TWH cross. He loves it, and so do I! In 3 years, we'll be doing Tevis. <3

just goes to show that any breed can do endurance!!! Yay for non arab endurance horses!! (like my thoroughbred/QH cross )

Oh, endurance sure is for any horse and any rider! Fantastic sport!
Sure, if you're aming wor the world cup it might be good with a light breed like arabian/arabian partbred, but just any breed can work fantastic for the shorter distances. But then again, how many of us aim for the WC?

World Cup? no

Tevis Buckle? YES!

Tevis - Now that got to be one amazing ride!

I feel that I have to clarify that I really don't mean that only arabians are ft for endurans - I just mean that that type of horse might have it easier as a general group.
Heck, we had a draft type horse here a few years ago that did up to 120km, and I believe I've seen a shetland that made it through a 80km

I had figured that

Yep, a fiord finished the tevis this last year, and a Quarter horse completed the tevis for the 13th time when she was 26!! now that is endurance!

This is awesome! Why cant there be these guys on the endurance rides I go on? Because then the 99% of people on arabs would look at them and not me the 1% on my appie lol that i just too cool

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourize In reply to Sooty-Bunnie [2012-05-03 08:33:47 +0000 UTC]

Haha, that bad huh?
We actually do have a few different breeds around here. Granted, the majority are arabians, but standardbreds are pretty common as well, and every now and then there are warmblods, ponies of different kinds, thoroughbreds, the occasional draft horses, some crosspreds and arabian part-breds and so on.
Haha, well you can always try to see it as if you're not mainstream . you certainly stand out from the crowd!

Ohhh I want a shire!! but would they really be good at endurance?? I thought a light horse like an arab was better for that, but maybe only in hot countries Ohh you make me want to go for a ride!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Colourize In reply to Minda-Mouse [2012-04-30 07:38:30 +0000 UTC]

Heavy horses and drafts are generally not the best horse for long distances and high speeds, and it's generally more difficult to get the pulse down in the vet gates. 20 km however is a really short distance, so any horse can do that 50 km is the shortest actual competative riding distance, and drafts could probably do that distance as well - perhaps not winning over the light breeds, but they could definitely finish the ride in a good way

Minda-Mouse In reply to Colourize [2012-05-01 03:50:03 +0000 UTC]

I bet it's more comfortable on a draft too

Colourize In reply to Minda-Mouse [2012-05-01 19:07:43 +0000 UTC]

Tha't probably a question of different tasts, I suppose I generally like small horses with an easy stride that are quick and easy to turn. I've never been a huge fan of the larger, heavier horses (not even too large warmbloods and similar breeds). But that's just me There are plenty of people who preferr the larger, heavier horses!^^

Fjords have great constitution for endurance.

My hubby and I wish to find a lovely large shire horse like this one that we can ride on together. We love doing everything as close as possible so the perfect horse is one like this with a long strong back and a gentle spirit.
