Description
Photo of the house points in the Hogwarts Castle at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Orlando. I was quite offended when I saw this actually - WHY ON EARTH IS RAVENCLAW IN LAST PLACE??? Ravenclaw is supposed to have intelligent, creative, and witty students, so why can't we at least beat the loyal and friendly Puffs? (No bias here at all.Photo taken in August 2010; edited with Photoshop.

bahaha! Y'know, I may be a Huffledor, but being more concerned about the Marauders Era instead of the Trio Era, I'm pretty sure Gryffindor was in last place A LOT those years! It wouldn't bother me!

We Ravenclaws are smart enough to recognize that House points are of no real importance, so we don't bother with them. Considering the number of points Gryffies get for doing stupid things, winning House points can hardly be considered a sign of intelligence.

Hm. That's a very shrewd point. But we're all still teenagers (assuming we're in hogwarts), and all still highly competitive. So, being in Ravenclaw and seeing people get house points for being a suck up to Snape or risking their lives to look cool rightfully gets me peeved. We do the best on OWLs and NEWTs, so shouldn't we be slightly rewarded for that? At least not look too dumb in front of the muggles that pass by that place every day, who have no understanding of house points.

I don't think the Slytherins have to suck up to Snape to get extra points. He seems to do it entirely on his own, in retaliation for the injustices he suffered due to the House system when he was a student. I suspect most of the actual punishment Snape deals out to his Slytherins occurs in-house and off the record.
If things were done in a rational and systematic fashion, there would be an agreed-upon point value for grades, awarded automatically. One could even have a system that awarded higher points for good grades in harder subjects, such as Potions or Arithmancy, than for softer classes such as Divination or Herbology. We Ravenclaws could stack up points on an ongoing basis to offset the bonuses Gryffies get for being heroic dunderheads.
P.S. Is it really necessary for ALL students to take five full years of Herbology, or is it just so Hogwarts won't have to hire a gardening staff?

Haha. I'm pretty sure herbology is for the.... cerebral-ly challenged, so to speak. But it's a nice respite from real classes, right? It's like care of magical creatures - not challenging in the least (unless you don't have a green thumb), but it can be fun. I can get behind lessons with nifflers. I have a soft spot for them. Not so much mandrakes or devil's snare.
I do believe Slytherins suck up to Snape, but I concede that maybe it's not for points. And you know he punishes Gryffindors (although most the time they deserve some form of reprimand) more severely. Since Snape really doesn't have an opinion on us Ravenclaws one way or another, I suppose it doesn't affect us. I just have a sore spot for unfair treatment, especially since we're obviously going further than most anyone in the other houses.
I agree with the house point system you devised!! Sigh. Only Ravenclaws can get things done. Although I admit I have a bias.

I don't think it's quite true that only Ravenclaws can get things done. I'd say we're the only ones who can get things done RATIONALLY!
Herbology should be an elective, like Care of Magical Creatures. I suspect one of the reasons it's a requirement is so Sprout can have the same status as the other three Heads of Houses. Academic politics has its own rules!

True, true. Maybe the only ones to get things done that continue to function properly after time has passed.
I've always wondered why Sprout was a head. She clearly proved herself in the Battle, but before that? I don't know, are there no other hufflepuff teachers? She's very sweet, but I have doubts as to if she can effectively lead. Although leading hufflepufs isn't too hard, they're very cooperative.

In normal times, a Head of House would not have to be skilled in battle. The supposed kindness and motherliness of Sprout is mostly fanon (we see little of her in canon), but it's a much better qualification for caring for a House full of children than McGonagall's distant toughness. Minerva doesn't seem to pay much attention to her children, and just lets them run wild.
We see even less of Flitwick than we do of Sprout, but I imagine he focuses on academics, and is mainly concerned with whether they keep up on their schoolwork. Snape looks out for his Slytherins and protects them, then gets criticized for favoritism because of it. I don't suppose he's particularly warm, though.
I saw one fanfic in which Sprout and Snape were depicted as the most effective Heads, partly because they help each other. Snape sends his emotionally distraught children to Sprout to be comforted, and Sprout sends her uncontrolled delinquents to Snape to be disciplined.
Considering the heavy class-load carried by teachers of required subjects, it would probably make more sense for the Heads of Houses to be chosen from among the teachers of electives. But whoever said Hogwarts makes sense?

ceeceftw In reply to janach [2011-11-07 02:13:12 +0000 UTC]
Also, strictly on a somewhat (entirely) biased level, Flitwick doesn't NEED to be there. Ravenclaws can hold their own. I think each house needs what the house leader gives them. For us, it's basically the trust we aren't going to screw things up, and relative freedom. For Puffies, it's the mothering, big boned love, since they usually need the most attention (not like attention whores, like they're not quite yet capable of being w/o a loving adult figure). McGonagall works for Gryffindor and Snape for Slytherin. They embody their houses.
Hogwarts is an enigma. That's what makes it so lovable!

Hufflepuffs are great! Gryffindors are the ancient Celts: wild and fearless, casting aside their plaids and racing into battle naked, swinging their broadswords. Hufflepuffs are the Roman legions: loyal, disciplined, digging formal entrenchments at every night’s encampment, marching into battle with shields interlocked, short swords at the ready. The Celts are romantic and we all love them, but who wins the Empire?
Ravenclaws are the ancient Egyptians, the ones with centuries of arcane knowledge and impressive technical skills. And Slytherins are the Greeks: reaching for greatness, creating a brief civilization of unparalleled brilliance, establishing the foundations of Western intellectual culture, then falling apart in petty wars and political struggles and mutual distrust. And the Roman Legions march over them, and all they have is their history. Hufflepuff rules the world!
