Description
Well, this is the first time I posted something in a while. So I thought I would introduce you to Krya’s race: the Psykronians. I had hoped to post this yesterday, but it didn’t quite pan out. Regardless, I hope you enjoy this. Keep in mind this is a fairly long read, but I’ll try to stick to the point.Psykronians are a species of humanoid aliens native to the planet Oath, specifically its arctic hemisphere Psykron. Main protagonist Krya Vom-Za is the princess of the Psykronians. Along with their rivals, the Pyrahks, Psykronians are an evolutionary offshoot of genetically engineered Oathans (a.k.a. the Ancients) that quickly adapted to their changing surroundings. They are renowned for their high tolerance of cold climates, their proud warrior culture that prizes bravery and honor, and their female royalty who possess superhuman powers.
Oathans were once a highly technologically advanced race. They were particularly renowned throughout the Andromeda galaxy for their massive strides in genetic engineering in their efforts to become a perfect race. But thousands of years ago, a massive cataclysm struck the planet, tipping it onto its side, destroying the Oathans’ civilization. The exact cause was lost to time (or at least it was to those on the planet). Regardless, dramatic climate change started to occur, leading to the planet being divided into 2 hemispheres: the arid hemisphere Pyraq facing the primary yellow star, and the frigid hemisphere Psykron facing the secondary red star. The Oathans quickly adapted as a result of their genetic engineering; in time, the original Oathans (or the Ancients as they are now known) became effectively extinct, replaced by Psykronians and Pyraqs.
Superficially, Psykronians appear similar to humans, albeit with aesthetic differences. They typically stand at least 6’ tall to better retain heat in their frosty environment; some have been known to grow as much as 8’ tall. They sport either blue, white, or purple hair, along with blue or purple eyes.
Adding on to their exotic appearance, Psykronian physiology is decidedly unique from humans. Psykronian blood is tinted blue with psykroglobin, a recently discovered chemical that, when exposed to oxygen, releases heat, which spreads across the body and keeps the Psykronian warm. Psykronians keep their blue tongues compressed within their mouths, but they can extend their tongues up to 3’ from their mouths to grab food in a manner similar to a frog or chameleon. Biologists think this is a vestigial remnant of their evolutionary ancestors using their tongues to catch fruit and small animals millions of years ago.
Psykronians have 3 hearts and 2 stomachs. They can see at night and in blizzards with protective, photosensitive membrane that slips over their eyes. Their nostrils and mouths have glands that heat the air they inhale. Each of their cells contain antifreeze proteins that inhibit ice crystal growth within their bodies and protects them from subzero temperatures. They are also oviparous (they lay/hatch from eggs; see more about that here: www.deviantart.com/cometcolt/a… ).
Psykronians are omnivorous, and they are able to adapt to different biochemistries, allowing them to eat foodstuffs on planets other than their own. Their preferred food seems to be fish due to its abundance and nutritional value, although they also eat fruit and grains.
Psykronians are extremely hardy, capable of enduring temperatures as low as -200°C (-328°F), and they are virtually immune to frostbite and hypothermia. However, they struggle to survive in temperatures higher than 30°C (86°F), and unless they are quickly taken to a cool environment or possess the frigiokinetic powers possessed by Krya, they will die of heatstroke within minutes. Analysis of the Psykronian genome suggests that they have retained their Oathan ancestors’ ability to edit their own RNA and, theoretically, could potentially adapt to warmer climates over time. However, due to millennia spent acclimating to their native arctic environment, Psykronians would likely adapt much more slowly than Oathans. More data should be collected before this hypothesis can be tested.
Psykronians can also withstand low-oxygen and radioactive environments, including outer space. They can hold their breath for up to half an hour, and pockets within their lungs let them store oxygen for later use. They can heal their wounds in minutes and regenerate lost limbs within minutes.
As Psykronians are adapted to Oath’s strong gravitational pull, they are capable of performing superhuman physical feats on celestial bodies with weaker gravity such as Earth. Psykronians can effortlessly lift up to 50 tons and leap as high as 30’ into the air. They would also weigh up to 1/20 of how much they weigh on their home planet.
Female royalty (e.g. Krya, Kythea, every queen & princess before them) are capable of forming pocket vacuums that compress and supercool the molecules within, forming them into ice. They can also compress and ionize air within the subzero pocket vacuum before propelling the electrically charged air forward into a beam of supercooled plasma. None of the Psykronians know where these powers came from, nor did they ever question it.
Psykronians worship the mother goddess Za. They believe all female royalty are directly descended from Za and inherited Her power to protect them.
But Psykronians are also a proud warrior race who strongly value honor and courage. While not all of them like to fight (Krya being a notable pacifist), they are expected to learn combat and survival skills from an early age. Psykronian royalty in particular, such as Krya, are traditionally required to master martial arts and swordsmanship by their teens. That is not to say that Psykronians are without finer qualities. Psykronian artists, musicians, scientists, and philosophers do exist. But with few exceptions such as Kythea, intellectuals are not as well regarded by Psykronian society due to the fear they may propose ideas that violate their religion, as well as the perceived notion that they are weak.
For most of their history, Psykronians were technophobic. Aside from rudimentary tools and buildings, they never developed anything more advanced. They believed technology corrupted the Ancients’ souls and caused their civilization’s downfall. But for the past century (particularly during Kythea’s enlightened rule), Psykronians have been shedding this stigma. Though priests and religious extremists still protest, most Psykronians have started restoring the Oathans’ technology and even began developing their own technology. Psykronians are locked in an arms race with their sworn enemies, the Pyraqs, who have fought them for thousands of years and are also advancing their technology.
But as of now, Psykronians are in a precarious state. They have recently been conquered by the Pyraqs and forced into slave labor, while their king Varkon has been deposed and replaced with a puppet ruler who serves the Pyraqs. Their princess, Krya Vom-Za, escaped the Pyraqs’ imprisonment and fled to Earth. But she hopes to return to her homeworld and save her people.
Well, I think that’s all the information you need to know about Psykronians for now. Keep an eye out for more Princess of Psykron material.
