Holy wall of text, Batman!
Behold! Project Princess, my submission to repair-her-armor on tumblr. Dunno if it was accepted, we shall find out.

In any case, after seeing yet another boring “Disney Princess as Sexy Warriors" feature (ie. Disney Princesses in really poorly photoshopped bikini armor), and seeing that r-h-a was cool with submitting ideas for princess armor, I decided to give the featured princesses some comparatively functional armor. I wanted the costumes to be a combination of relevant period armor, their original costumes, and some fantasy elements for spice. As mentioned before, I only did armor for the princesses featured in the photoset, so Mulan, Merida, and Rapunzel aren’t featured (and Mulan already has functioning armor as Ping, in any case).

Aurora’s relatively simple suit was based on 16th/17th century French plate mail; though Sleeping Beauty isn’t set in a definite location, I chose French because its most popular rendition was published by the French author Charles Perrault. Since she didn’t do a whole heck of a lot in her film, I decided to keep most of her dress intact to give her the appearance of a leader who doesn’t hit the front lines, but at the very least knows how to defend herself. Her weapon of choice is the shortsword and shield, based on the weapons Prince Philip used to rescue her. While I am firmly in the camp of “Aurora’s real dress is blue," I kept her in pink for the same reason Disney does: Cinderella came first.

Since The Princess and the Frog has a definite time and setting (1920s Nawlins), I decided to keep Tiana in the spirit of the era and combined a few women’s uniforms from WWI (thanks to American Women in the First World War for the awesome references!).Given her crafty appearance, I felt a pistol (colored teal after her jewelry lolidunno) was a fitting weapon.

Jasmine was by far one of the hardest to find good references for; it’s not particularly fun when you’re trying to find decent Persian armor references and all you find is terrorists, horses, or Assassin’s Creed. Eventually I found a relatively acceptable reference for Persian/Bedouin style armor on a Mount and Blade mod forum and just went with that. I wanted Jasmine to have the feeling of a sneaky assassin-type, what with her habit of sneaking out of the palace and all, but I didn’t want to give her the old standby scimitar, so I gave her a pair of katar instead. Yes, katar are Indian weapons, but Agrabah was a mishmash of, like, six different parts of India and the Middle East, so yeah.

Belle is my super favoritest princess forever and ever, so I had to really make her boss. Her outfit was based on the uniform of the French dragoon and combines her ball gown and Beast’s formal suit. Her chosen weapons are the pistol and rapier, colored a regal crimson and gold. Since in the original story, she was described as being “well fed" under the Beast’s care, I wanted to make her look the part, so she’s a bit chubsier than her normal appearance. I also based her hair a little more on her “redesigned" hair because as much as I think the redesigns are a big sparkly mess, by and large, I do like what they did with her hair.

Cinderella’s armor, like Aurora’s, was based on 16th/17th century full plate, but her was based on a German suit in honor of the Brothers Grimm. Since she was a bit more active in her story than Aurora, I made her a halberdier: her halberd is designed after that goofy pink dress she’s planned to wear to the ball before. I also wanted her to REALLY earn her name, so I gave her some facial burn scarring and a penchant for fire magic. I initially wanted her armor to look like glass, ala The Elder Scrolls’ Glass Armor, but alas I couldn’t quite figure out how to color it properly and scrapped it. Let’s just pretend, shall we?

Now Snow White is described as the “sweetest" of the princesses, so of course I wanted to make her the most likely candidate to stone cold kill a man out of all of them. Instead of using full plate like I did with the other two princesses without a definite location, Aurora and Cinderellla, I made her a vicious potion master with leather armor. I follow a number of leather-workers on deviantart, and the things you can do with leather are incredible, really. As a little bit of headcanon for this version, it’s rumored that in her bag, she keeps a box with her heart inside, which is how she’s able to keep such a sweet and charming demeanor up while being such a horrible monster.

Pocahontas, like Jasmine, was incredibly hard to find good resources for, primarily because I wanted to strictly use Powhatan Indian designs in her costume; I didn’t want to jumble together twelve different Indian tribes, especially since while the character herself isn’t exactly an accurate representation in the least, she IS based on a real person and I’d like to pay at least some respect. So ultimately her outfit didn’t go through a huge overhaul, since I couldn’t get a whole lot of good reference on Powhatan tribal wear outside of three images. Thus I improvised: I gave her a nice, warm cloak trimmed with the fur of some unknown blue beast, made her characteristic necklace into the fastener of the cloak, and gave her the facial markings and tattoos that a woman of her status would naturally have.

Now Ariel I just went completely nuts with since A) she’s a purely fantasy character and B) she doesn’t exactly have much of an outfit to begin with, at least as a mermaid anyway. I wanted to keep her as a mermaid instead of her normal human appearance since that really allowed me to go crazy with the design. All of her colors are based on various types of coral and anemone (so pardon if they’re a bit gaudy), and her large claw was inspired by the claw of the fiddler crab.

So this was a fun project. More than a little frustrating at times, but overall I’m pleased with the outcome. Maybe I’ll throw in Mulan, Rapunzel and Merida some time (though I’m not really sure what I’d do with Mulan since, like I said before, she’s already got a suit of armor).

I absolutely love your takes on Ariel and Tiana!

Your Jasmine design also looks cool, but unfortunately she doesn't retain enough of her movie appearance to be recognisable... I only knew it was her because she was in a line up with the other princesses...

Well executed. Great concept and explanations.  Two questions, are you going to show them individually (since Cinderella and Belle are partially cut off)? And.... Aurora in blue, pretty please? :-D

By the by, if memory serves (where's my walker? ) Cinderella's pink dress was her mothers'.

1) Probably not, since they were largely meant to be seen together. I do have them in pairs on my tumblr post, however.
2) I would've loved to have drawn Aurora in blue, since I much prefer her blue dress, but as I mentioned, I wanted to keep her color distinct from Cinderella's blue.

And you're right, it was! A lot of the floofy ribbon additions were from the animals, though, and I always thought they looked kinda silly.

If I do an extended roster, I'll definitely add them! The only reason they weren't featured in this set was because they weren't in the crappy bikini photoshoot this set was based on, but Elsa and Anna would probably lend themselves well to sweet Viking armor.

What about Rapunzel?

Rapunzel wasn't featured in the photoshoot that this image was based on, so I didn't create an armor for her. If I do decide to do a second set, I'll certainly include her, though.

If you do add Rapunzel would you also mind including Merida, Elsa and Anna too?

I like Aurora's expression, the rest...I'm not sure. I think if you went with her Woodsy-Briar Rose outfit you could do more with it. Maybe include chain mail, or incorporate a helmet with her headband she wears. The Pink Dress is just so Mattel pink it makes it a little difficult to register as armor. Everything else about this is pretty damn fabulous. Great concept, fair execution, I like how you changed their faces, they don't all have the Disney face and adds variety.

I saw this and I was so excited, because I'm sketching a series that is kinda like this. All I have left to sketch is Merida, and we're having a disagreement. I want the drawing to look good, and the drawing wants to look like scribbles. (I also challenge you to draw Merida with less drastic proportions and still have it look like her. Mother of fuck it's frustrating.) I love seeing this interpretation and if these ladies entered battle, I do believe they would kick some ass. ALSO I NOTICE THAT AURORA'S SHORT SWORD LOOKS LIKE A NEEDLE OR ALMOST A SPINDLE. This brings me joy for so many reasons. One being, that I had similar thoughts for my design.

Anyway I've been on this huge anti-sexy armor kick...and it pretty much stuck after I read that Red Sonja's scale mail bikini didn't have magical properties. That's always been my head canon since the Conan universe is such an awesome universe. I was used to the 80s leather clad Movie-Sonja, and figured that when I saw the bikini, it surely must be magical. But no, no it's not. At least in the novel Azure Bonds, the protagonist gets sexy mail and it is imbued with magical protective properties.

I digress... this is damned awesome.

Yeah, Aurora's was the first design I did and was kinda so-so. I didn't really devote as much to its design as I did, say, Cinderella's. And you're right, I probably should've went with the Briar Rose outfit instead, maybe made her more of a ranger-type now that I think about it. But thank you!

I really appreciate the functionality of armor that you used! I was just thinking about skimpy, sexy female armor last night and thinking "Whose bright idea was that???" You're completely exposed, and if any culture truly tried that, that design of armor would be scrapped fairly soon to protect their warriors.

I've just never liked the idea of a warrior that I'm supposed to be taking seriously and who I'm being repeatedly told is some sort of war vet or expert mercenary or the like wearing a metal g-string and pasties. Not only does armor like this (geekologie.com/2013/06/make-it... , which was what inspired this image) not protect a darn thing, not even the boobies they're covering, they just look ridiculously uncomfortable. Plus I've always found skimpy armors to be incredibly boring compared to a well designed set of full plate or leather armor. There's only so much you can do with a two piece, some feathers, and swirly body paint, you know?

I agree. And personally, I detest the objectifying of women where it has gotten to the point that it bleeds even on the battlefield. (no pun intended) If a woman is supposed to be a warrior, treat her as a warrior, don't turn her into a piece of meat.
