I'd guess they're disliked because of the way they're portrayed, between their roles in animation and documentaries typically showing them stealing kills there's not much out there to give a posative perception.

Yeah, it's such a shame. They hunt just as much if not more than they scavenge. And lions chase them off of well-earned kills frequently too.
