He just watches, staring into a void of black. This happens sometimes at night. He's not asleep, but not awake, either. It's...like he's just looking at his own mind.

Hours, weeks, years pass. Then a figure fades into view, a young boy maybe ten or eleven. He's smiling, and seems happy about something.

"Hey, mister!"

"...Hey."

"Why the funny look? Something wrong?"

The man shrugs slightly, crouching and staring at the boy. "You're...pretty cheerful, huh?"

"Ha, yeah, I guess so. Something awesome happened to me today, and I'm feeling good!"

Standing, the man turns away, sighing. He knows what the boy means, of course. It's him, after all.

"Why...when did you change?"

"Huh?"

"...Why do things have to change?"

The boy laughs, shrugging and wandering about. "I dunno. I guess it's because we'd all die of boredom, if nothing changed!" Spinning towards the man, he pokes him. "So, who are you?"

The man looks at the boy for a long time, his cold, expressionless eyes gradually fading to a dull yellow.

"I..."

He pauses, before smiling and patting the boy's hair. Turning once more, he begins walking into the black void.

"...I don't know. We'll have to find out, huh?"

Somewhere, a door opens. Maybe it leads to an answer?
