Sapphire, the bay-roan filly, did not take heed to her mother's pleading. Tiny white heels continued to kick the frozen powders skyward, small hooves carving ruts through the snow. T'was when another high-pitched "Wooo-hooo!" escaped Sapphire's mouth that her mother, Jewel, took further action.

"Sapphire!" the large mare scolded, charging forwards with her skull held low and snaking. The filly froze in her place! Little ears fled backward, her own skull swooping low as dark lips performed some innocent *smacks* onto the air. 'I'm small and submissive!'

Jewel's temperament immediately changed in response to gaining her daughter's undivided attention. "We cannot be too loud here," she crooned, pink lips administering some gentle kisses upon Saphlphire's forehead. "We may attract some unwanted attention---" that final word trailed off into an uncomfortable hum.

Jewel's head sprung heavenward, neck muscles snapping. Her ebon'-colored mane flew about only to settle seconds later. "Get behind me. Someone's coming." Sapphire did what she was told, small head (with forward-reaching ears) peering out from behind her mom's hindquarters.

T'was then that Gem arrived, the bay mare's body crashing through the dense treeline with numerous *snaps* emitted -from breaking branches. She burst onto the scene as though ready to go to war, chest puffed up and those charcoal limbs prepped for further motion. She was in protection mode, mama-bear mare ready to play savior to this hollering filly-- but oh. This scene, a mother and babe, hadn't been what Gem was expecting at all. She'd expected, rather, another orphan that she could stuff beneath her maternal wings.

Speaking of orphans, little Tareek had arrived just after his adoptive mother. He'd followed the path that Gem had created through the thick forests, careful to dodge those broken limbs. Like monsters they sought to reach out and claw at his pale hide... but they'd not be successful this day! He claimed residence aside mama Gem, curious ears tilted forward. Another foal?

Jewel's expression staged both a look of concern and mild aggression. No doubt the splashed lass was also prepared to declare war; though her motives were fear-based, hopeing to protect her sweet child from harm. As other horses, one by one, appeared on scene after the bay mare (Gem), Jewel couldn't contain the fiery snort that launched itself from those flared nostrils. "Stay back!" she squealed thereafter, a forehoof slammed aggressively into the snow underfoot.

Fliss was the next to arrive on scene. First, her eyes gobbled up the details of the scene infront of them. An over-protective mother with a frightened (yet obviously curious) child. Then the sentry's attention quickly moved to surveying their other surroundings for potential danger, confident that her herd mates would have the mother-mare situation handled on their own.

Luna arrived quickly after Fliss, ears forward and a huge smile forming. MORE FRIENDS?-- But it was Gem who spoke first, the social butterfly daring one forwards step before those dark lips loosed some kind tones. "We mean no harm," she offered quietly. "I heard your filly, and thought she had needed rescuing." Gem continued, her somber nose motioning towards the smallest girl.

"Looks like she's well protected already though!" Luna interrupted with a joyous nicker, meaning to compliment the splashed mare (Jewel).

After another moment of continued staring, with cautious senses tuned in to this group of friendly mares, Jewel finally decided to drop her guard - just a bit, though. The mare's dark tail swatted at her bright ankles, which brought Sapphire's gaze to her mom's own. Jewel quietly checked her daughter over, as though making a quick decision, before her focus returned to both Gem and Luna. "I do my best for her," Jewel finally admitted. Twinned ears couldn't decide whereas they wanted to remain curiously held forward, or slip uncomfortably backward still.

"I'm Sapphire!" the little filly suddenly blurted. "and I'm Luna!" she received in return. The varnish-roan mare was suddenly overtaken by a foalish energy, trotting forward to bypass Gem and approach these strangers without hesitation.

Jewel couldn't hide the light chuckle that rose from her chest. These mares were obviously harmless, and seemed to have no specific leader amongst them. Before she was able to wonder futher though, Jewel was forced to make a decision. Reject or Accept Luna's bold advance.

"Caution," the mother whispered to her filly. "--like we've practiced." Jewel sidestepped just enough to invite Luna into their personal space, to which Sapphire responded by walking forwards against her mother's shoulders, never forsakening the physical contact. The filly's little tail was wagging out of control, similar to that of a domestic canine's. Her lips, wearing the brightest of smiles, reaching up to softly bump Luna's, which were now slowly descending. This was so exciting for Sapphire! Jewel was aware, standing protectively close and marveling at how foal-ish Luna still seemed to be. A child's mind trapped in an adults body.

"Don't you want to say hi?" Gem questioned Tareek, turning to administer a soft, encouraging touch onto his shoulder. The colts eyes had been fixated upon the filly's gorgeous features, surely caught in some spectacular day dream- until mother woke him. "Huh? No no noo." Tareek back-pedalled, ears flat, fear apparent. He'd never approached a girl before-- er, not one his own age at least. The thought caused an uncomfortable butterfly-feeling to flood his little chest. Gem only giggled in response.

Fliss had broken away from their entrance point now. The watchful mare was tracking along the perimeter of the forestline that circled the clearing. Her priority, over pleasant conversation, was securing the area and ensuring nothing else (or no one else) was currently lurking in the shadows. There WAS someone out there though... someone who had yet to unveil themselves and step into the light of day.

"Is it just you girls?" Jewel dropped the question, feeling more safe as she gave another look-over to her newfound company.

"And me," a more masculine tone called out, pursued by the body of a tobiano stallion. The cloud-colored brute stepped through the same entrance trail that his mares had come, moment's prior to his own arrival. Gem's soft muzzle immediately sought her stallion's neck, a nuzzle administered there as she inhaled his unique cologne. There was obviously some new chemistry between these two.

"My name is Durango," he announced before his lips kissed Gem's shoulder, returning her affection in kind.

Jewel watched him, her facial features presenting a new sense of logical suspicion. Something else caught her attention though. Each and every one of Durango's mares had turned to smile at him as he spoke. Even the ever-vigilant sentry stopped her rounds to pause and offer the brute a welcoming smile. They were infatuated with him. Like some fairytale hero that had proven his worth through many'a valiant acts. His friendly mares, and the obvious adoration they held for him, were enough for Jewel to consider him a potential suitor.

"Jewel." she responded simply, suddenly sounding antisocial. It was a ploy to taunt the beastly lad, acting disinterested to see if he'd intend to pursue her affections.

No stranger to those 'hard to get' mares, Durango was successfully baited. "A beautiful name," he'd croon back, a step or two taken, careful to not push his luck. "--and this little lady?" Muzzle would motion towards the filly.

Sapphire fell silent, nervous in the presence of the unknown male. Her mother used the opportunity to keep the stallion's focus though. "My daughter, Sapphire." Jewel mirrored Durango's forward steps.

This mare's actions called Durango's heart to skip a beat. Like any testosterone-filled man, he found thrill in this chase. The brute's forward steps became more deliberate and bolder, muscle flexing across his splotchy physique. Jewel enjoyed the presentation, extending out her muzzle for an exchange of scents.

Alluring perfumes filled Durango's lungs; and with an exhale, his own masculine cologne was forcefed straight into the mare's. Jewel enjoyed his confident bearing, so much so, that SHE was suddenly doing the chasing.

"Is there room for us?" she whispered, almost scolding herself as she did so. Hormones were wild. Something about him was magnetic.

"I'll do my best to sheild you both from the threats of this world..."

And just like that, a wave of comfort washed over Jewel. Concerns for the safety of her daughter melted away in seconds. Her hardened facade failed, knees weak and shoulders heavy from the realization of weight they had been carrying.

No longer a single mom, Jewel could relax. Life felt a lot simpler in the presence of her equine kin. She officially joins the herd.
