When and how did you start cosplaying: It started as Halloween costumes and then the word cosplay came into the modern lexicon. It was the 90s

What was your first cosplay? Harley Quinn

What was the most difficult character: It’s between Opal from Steven Universe which has two extra arms and on stilts, and Giovanna from Magia Record which involves a giant heavy puppet riding on my back.

What characters are you planning and type of character are you drawn to?

I am deeply drawn to and feel compelled to make as many Harley Quinn cosplays as possible. I have a lot of fun as Harley and feel most like I can let go and be myself. I also really love Magia Record and the Madoka franchise as well as X-Men and plan on various characters out of those although focusing on Iroha from Magia Record and Magik from X-Men. I suppose I am drawn to fem characters who the world has tried its best to destroy but have still persevered.

What is your process when starting from the beginning with a new cosplay?

It depends on the cosplay and what is needed. If the cosplay has any regularly available items, like a white button up shirt, I look to consignment shops. I’ll also go in that direction if I can alter something or use old bed sheets or curtains which are cheaper than fabric. If I need a specific fabric in a specific color, then I will check a few local fabric stores, then look online. Sometimes I order a sample. When it comes to stripes and plaids though I have taken to making my own pattern digitally and having that printed. It is almost impossible to find the exact stripes or plaids to match some characters.

Are there any helpful hints in sewing, costume design, or any other aspects of your cosplay that you discovered doing your creations?

Hot glue will usually let you down. Pleather/PVC/faux leather/Vegan leather or whatever new name they come up with for it is all essentially an unstable soft plastic. All plastics are liquids with high viscosity. They are constantly transferring oils and colors. If you are storing any pleather, you should wrap it in tissue paper. I have had many Harley Suits or X-Men suits ruined by something red touching something yellow or something black touching something red. There is no possible way to un dye the plastic. Most pleather outfits will only last a few years.Between friction and breakdown of material, the pleather will start to separate. When pleather starts to breakdown, it gives off a toxic gas. Much like working with 3-D printers, resin pouring or spray painting, it is something to keep in mind, although the amounts would be less, if you have a tiny apartment filled with pleather material for some reason, ventilation is something to keep in mind.

Do you have a preferred brand of make up in your cosplay? And if so why?

I have preferred skin care more so than preferred makeup. Sunscreen can make you more light in pictures, which for the characters I usually do isn’t really a problem, so I always make sure I have a good sunscreen on. Right now for my face I’m using Murad and for my eyes supergoop’s eye sunscreen which I think helps as a primer. I also use Supergoop’s Play sunscreen as my go to. I was using the Neutrogena spf100 before that, and that is my go to 2nd choice. The other thing that I think is important and I wish I knew sooner, was to avoid makeup wipes in favor of a cold cream to remove make-up. The make up wipes can leave micro scrapes on your skin and that kind of damage builds up and dries you out. I think most of us are trying to avoid wrinkles and pre aging our skin. I follow a lot of advice from the Welsh brothers, Robert Welsh for makeup tips and James Welsh on skin care.

What are you listening to?

I listen to a variety of things but ska music feels seasonably summer-like and helps me stay alert.

Favorite movies? I love the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. They are great for crafting. Also The Dark Knight

Favorite Animes? Madoka Magika is my top favorite. I also like Sailor Moon, Magic Knights Rayearth, Iria Zeram the Animation, Steins Gate and more modern Toilet Bound Hanako and Chainsaw Man.

Favorite TV Shows? Batman the Animated series

Is there a scheme from an anime, cartoon, movie or tv show that left a big impression on you and what was it?

I suppose the way magical girls utilize their wishes and the consequences that come of it in the Madoka Magica universe.

Books? I read a lot of comics, mostly X-Men focus on New Mutants

Games? I collect vintage games. I like to have them at conventions for people to try. My Favorites: Phoenix (atari) Gun Nac (NES) Columns, Sonic3 (Genesis) Knuckles Chaotix (32x) and Magic Knights Rayearth (Saturn) Wario Ware (GBA)

Beverage? Itoen Green tea

Fast Food/ JunkFood of choice? Chocolate Chip Cookies

Candy Bar? Reeses PB cups

Favorite Breakfast cereal? Generic Honey Bunches of Oats so no BHT

Is there something not going on in the cosplay world that you would want to see or is there something you want to change? Less emphasis on winning cosplay contests and more on building community and having fun

What was your favorite toy growing up? My Little Ponies

Who is your biggest character crush and why? I have a type, untethered gods of chaos with a playful side.

You enter a warehouse etc: I mean as Harley Quinn, would they really want to attack? I mean I'm basically a clown, they're basically clowns. I think I would be like woah guys, we playing some games or what? If they were still feeling feisty, I mean plan B is the bat and I don’t mean the dark, mysterious and full of childhood trauma kind.

If you had to be chained with a character for a year etc: Kyubey, it’s basically a robot and won’t really care when I need to go to the bathroom plus they seem to be pretty cuddly

You can have dinner with your favorite character etc: Favorite seems less interesting, so if I was on a dinner date with Bill Cypher, I think I would ask him to compare and contrast all the stages of evolution and extinction on the planet and ask him if there were any other interesting stages of development anywhere else he would like to note.

What’s number 1 on your bucket list? I want to make a Harley Quinn Fan film

What advice would you give to people getting started in cosplay? Do whatever feels most fun and makes you happiest. If it isn’t making you happy, figure out why. A little cosplay stress is okay but if it makes you cry or is negatively affecting your life, take a step back and re-evaluate what your goals are and if what you are doing is worth it. You don’t have to compete to cosplay, you can just do it and ignore that entire scene. If certain people are causing you grief, step away from them and find real friends who will stick by you.
