Description What is likely to be the next terrorist target(s)?

Well, schools, colleges and hospitals are liberal bastions and virtually gun free. Thank god there is a strong push to protect those places -- uh, that's right. There isn't.

If guns didn't exist, people would easily find new and other ways of murder. Maybe we oughta take steak knives from people...

You think I haven't heard this one from the gun camp before? I dare you to find me something attainable by civilians with the destructive force of a firearm.

You think the Virginia Tech guy could have killed 32 people with a steak knife? Steak knives are used to cut steak. Guns were expressly designed to kill living things.

"I dare you to find me something attainable by civilians with the destructive force of a firearm."

Defense of family, self and home. I would think twice about breaking an entering into someone's home if the average household was armed...

Granted, a person would have a hard time committing mass murder.

I would think twice about robbing a house if I had a steak knife therefore if guns did not exist then it would be easier to defend yourself.

FieldsOfFire In reply to Shao-Feng-Li [2008-05-02 03:46:22 +0000 UTC]

Gun rights are the biggest catch-22 in modern society. Although I innately support gun control, I have a hard time explaining why. It does make a lot of sense for people who want to defend their family and home against criminals. Personally, I'd say that the best solution would be to try and root out the poverty, cultural misinformation, hopelessness, and misdirected rage that leads to crime, but in the short run, guns are almost a necessary evil.

However, this leads to everybody saying "I need a gun, because WHAT IF?" This leads to a populace where the majority is armed to kill, which only jacks up the paranoia even further. The media are no help at all, leading off every day with the day's murders and rapes. It's a vicious cycle, to be sure, but I can't buy the "more guns, less crime" argument that conservatoons tried to foist on me. People in general are not mature enough to walk around armed.

Shao-Feng-Li In reply to FieldsOfFire [2008-05-02 03:53:14 +0000 UTC]

I think I have to agree with you about the maturity issue. I think what we're seeing is the result of the lack of absolute values, standards and morals. You know, that "Do what ever feels right" nonsense.

What part of "It's OK for govt to have guns, but not the people?" don't you understand?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FieldsOfFire In reply to Conservatoons [2008-03-08 05:01:00 +0000 UTC]

I specifically told that I want cops, the enforcement arm of the govt, to have guns. They need guns. Joe Blow from down the street does not, and he shouldn't give him. If you're not a cop, hunter, bodyguard, etc., you have no need for a gun. Answer this: do you treasure the right to guns more the lives of gun victims?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Shao-Feng-Li In reply to FieldsOfFire [2008-05-02 03:15:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, people in their homes don't need guns to defend themselves.

Not everyone has immediate access to law enforcement. Where I live, the nearest cop is usually an hour away.

Look, if the guy is a killer, he'll get a gun or any weapon for that matter and kill you. If a person owns an arsenal of weapons, including guns, but is a good person, what do you have to fear?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FieldsOfFire In reply to Shao-Feng-Li [2008-05-02 03:30:57 +0000 UTC]

I know plenty of good gun owners. They're not the ones I'm worried about. As I told conservatoons, gun deaths are riding at an all-time high. No other country treasures the right to guns as much as the USA, and it shows in the obituaries.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shao-Feng-Li In reply to FieldsOfFire [2008-05-02 03:38:47 +0000 UTC]

So gun restrictions haven't helped at all. Maybe more restrictions isn't the solution.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FieldsOfFire In reply to Shao-Feng-Li [2008-05-02 03:53:22 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that gun use is as restricted as you think. Last time I checked, any American adult could walk into a gun shop and buy a gun. I don't trust the "arm everyone" argument that some pro-gun people employ. I'm sure you know some people you would run and hide from if they were allowed to pack heat. Many people are smart enough to handle guns responsibly. Some aren't. Those who aren't murder others freely. I live in Chicago, and about 23 students have been shot in FOUR MONTHS. What's wrong with this picture?

Shao-Feng-Li In reply to FieldsOfFire [2008-05-02 03:58:01 +0000 UTC]

"Some aren't. Those who aren't murder others freely."

Being stupid with a gun doesn't mean you murder people...

Ok, I don't believe that everyone should have a gun. Like folks who have committed violent felonies and such. Which I think is law. I don't want a murderer to have a gun again. (And I actually believe that he/she should receive the death penality for such a crime, but that's another topic altogether.)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FieldsOfFire In reply to Shao-Feng-Li [2008-05-02 04:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, I know ex-felons and convicts can't buy guns, but I thought that was obvious enough not to point out.

Death penalty? Ehhh...I'm on the fence. On one end, I imagine it costs our country a whole lot to feed and clothe an imprisoned Ted Kaczynski than it does to just kill him off. And it feels very gratifying and just to punish the most vile criminals among us with what they did to their victims. But I worry that I'm giving into mindless bloodlust. And what good does it really do anybody?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shao-Feng-Li In reply to FieldsOfFire [2008-05-02 04:13:45 +0000 UTC]

Right.

Let's see... I'm not wasting my tax dollars on the guy and he won't ever be able to murder another person.

If you let people know ahead a time, that murdering another person will earn you a lethal injection, and then they go ahead and commit murder, then they get what they deserve. You know, justice.

Also, if the death penalty for crimes such as murder was actually enforced, I think it would greatly deter those crimes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FieldsOfFire In reply to Shao-Feng-Li [2008-05-02 04:33:19 +0000 UTC]

What you're saying makes a lot of sense, but so does the other side, so I'm gonna play Devil's advocate for the sake of argument.

I think the most hardened criminals don't really care whether they live or die. The more recent mass murderers have killed themselves. I can't pull out any exact figures, but lethal injections cost a lot of money. Also, although justice has been served in a traditional sense, I must point out that governments based on cruel justice often fail, and "eye for an eye" diplomacy is something of an anachronism.

Also, I gotta go to bed. I'll be back on tomorrow at about 3:30 Central Standard Time, if you want to keep this going. I'd like to: you're one of the smarter people I've met on this site, even though I don't agree with you.

FieldsOfFire In reply to Conservatoons [2008-03-08 16:30:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh, so now we're debating the "arm everybody" tactic. This is what causes deadlock after a V-Tech or an NIU. Conservatives say, "well, if everybody had guns..." I fail to see how putting guns on the streets will reduce violence. Lots of Americans out there are simply not rational people. Scenario: A guy and his girlfriend are walking down the street. A bunch of gang members drive by and shoot the guy dead. The girlfriend pulls out her gun and shoots them all dead. A few days later, a friend of the gang members finds the girlfriend and shoots her. Her father, enraged, goes out to find the killers, but shoots the wrong guy. Which causes that guy's brother to shoot the father, which causes the father's friend to shoot the brother, and it goes on.
There are so many Americans out there who want guns, for vengeance, for 'self-defense', for pride, for manhood. Why should we put guns in the hands of every wacko who thinks they know how to use them?

what the hell does this have to do with terrorism?

When have you ever heard of a terrorist using a gun? They use bombs, and plastic knives.

and they go after economic and political targets, as those are the ones that destroyed their way of life.

it wasn't Colonial Middle School that came up with the idea of creating the nation of Israel.

If we "need signs" for anyone, it's our own people, because they are the ones coming into schools and shooting.

This comic lost all validation as an argument when you included terrorism in there.

I never said that they solution is to bomb schools and hospitals, but do you think we are doing any better over there? Do you think that we are going to be helping to rebuild all that infrastructure we damaged?

History would tell us no.

None of her neighbors had break ins.. we figure the thieves knew an easy target with her stupid sign.

I say we do a study.

We take two pairs of houses one in the bad side of town and one on the good side. One of each of the pair will be "gun free home" the other will be the target.

We set them up for a year and see which gets broken into more.
