Description
Yeahy, finally done with this one - took me approximately 3 months to finish this piece (including long breaks). It's done completely with ballpoint pen except for the black background, which was done with a black permanent marker and it's also the biggest piece I have done so far. It's an entire A4 page (21 x 29 cm).In the end I don't know if I am actually happy with the way this turned out, since there are quite some things I'd do differently now. But I think it is okay.
So enjoy hanging out with your friendly zombified gravedigger on the cursed cemetary deep in the woods. Grab a shovel and dig out that entity that is buried below.

I really like the texture you created on the gravedigger. That is some good work.

Are those worms or tentacles coming out of the ground?

They are supposed to be tentacles of some ancient being that is buried below. I guess they would be looking better if I had added suckers to them. Well, maybe next time...

Whoa, creepy and completely awesome! There is so much detail in this, and all done with ballpoint pen? You must've gone through quite a few pens XP One critique I have would be that the head in rather large in comparison to the rest of the zombie's body. also, the detail in the zombie and the tree, though incredible, they distract the viewer. The zombie should be the focal point, but the tree demands a lot of attention. Perhaps try adding more shadow on the tree; making it slightly darker than the zombie. Otherwise, this is very cool! Not only the detail is amazing, but the contrast really makes this pop out at you. Great job!

This, I love, it definitely has all the nice textures going for it, and transferring the vein work from the gravedigger to the tree really adds some creeep value. ah and the lantern is done wonderfully, it isn't easy to have big balls of light messin around with the shadows but you did it in a great way. awesome work!

This is gorgeous. I'm in love with all the stringy (for lack of better word) detail you've got going on. Very eerie look overall.

Awesoooome, nya, really amazing~ The detail is incredible, nya, and I cannot believe you had the tenacity to go at it for three months with a pen, nya~ xD
I really reeeaally love the simple-but-detailed look on the ground, the tentacles, the tombstone - well, most of it, nya~ The zombie and the tree are much more complex-looking, and it's good on the zombie - it makes sense, obviously, but it also contrasts and draws attention to him - but in my opinion, it clashes on the tree, and competes for attention from the zombie, nya~ The tree is a good composition element, and it's good that it's something "solid" to keep eyes in the frame, nya, but I feel like it's just too hard a clash with that beautiful style on the rest, nya~ >3<
Just my opinion, nya~ Take it as you will, nya~ xP

Very detailed work, I really like the texture that you have presented in this piece.
I do wonder why his legs appear to be sinking in to the ground.
I would say your light source seems a tiny bit off, as the hole background is black but the top of his head is highlighted white it suggests that the light is coming from more places than just the candle.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment and for looking at my drawing.
And of course you are right about both aspects you mentioned. Both problems originate from the fact that I did not actually plan this drawing before hand and instead just kept adding stuff that seemed to work. I started out with the gravedigger-zombie, didn't really think about the light source at that point and thought the reflection on his forehead would just look pretty good... when I got to his hands I thought a candle/lantern-thing would be pretty cool. Similar thing happened with his legs - when I did the shovel I imagined him standing behind a pile of dirt, so you wouldn't be able to see his legs... but when I filled in the overall background the pile just kinda got lost... so this is why you get the impression, that he's sinking into the ground.
Anyway - I think it is awesome that you actually noticed these things and took your time to look at the piece this closely and paying that much attention! Thanks!

your style is unique, i like it a lot!
ball-point gives a very nice effect, and it really works at the dark theme your drawings have!
the composition is well thought, and the details are stunning!
i can only say you did an AMAZING job!

Hmm, pen of choice? Good question! I used to work pilot ballpoint - especially with the "PILOT BPS-GP 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
This piece was done with a cheap ballpoint pen from a local office supply store - apparently the brand name is "Idena". I'm pretty happy with it, but I'll still try out other ballpoints.

HAH! I know what you mean about your "cheap ballpoint from a local store"---for the longest time, my favorite layout pencil was a pencil I picked up from our local SUBWAY.
...I've tried the Pilot fine point---it's great!!!

nice composition:
you have a special style for the line and shadows.
something macabre inside also, which had a special mood to your works.
nice

Thanks for the nice comment.
Actually I did not really sketch any of this drawing. I started out with the gravedigger, then did the foreground (tentacles, tombstone, etc.) and at last the tree on the right and top part of the drawing. It was a really smooth process. Although I did not plan how this drawing should look in the end, it all came very naturally. There are certain parts which I did try out before actually putting them in this drawing though (the shovel for example).
