Resampling a texture that has been shpereized to gain better quality is common knowledge...I though!

I'm doing it your way; for a big planet for a 1600x1200 Wallpaper, i use a texture around 6000x6000. Carefully used, the sharpen tool can be very helpfull, too

But the spherize filter still blows up the form of the way you shaped your texture. The only way imo to do it without any loss of quality is to create a texture with larger dimensions so that you can wrap it arround a sphere inside a 3d program, that way the texture doesn't get to deformed.
