Thanks for sharing. I wish more people would upload their tutorials as pdf files. They are so much easier to read and archive than jpgs the size of Alaska.

thank you so much!

I am happy that you liked it and I am although glad that you are of the same opinion than I am.
I think pdfs are a lot easier to print and even to be watched on the screen...

Thanks for you comment and good luck!

i'm so sorry for that large file!
otherwise picture-quality will loose
in quality but i you want i can deliver a
smaller version for dialup users.

maybe you can although use the image-
version? same content, same tutorial.

tutorial part 1
tutorial part 2
tutorial part 3
tutorial part 4

but the file size seems to be even larger...
send me a note if you want a smaller version

You're gonna get hordes of people from ` alyn 's page so I'll keep this short - I think the effort and detail you've put into this is remarkable and certainly a wonderful resource for all space-artists. I also love your gallery

Well, i've read it, and it certainly does explain very in-depth how to create earthlike textures. I would definetely like to see the part of developing cities!

Extremely amazing job, i really wish i had a tablet though.

continentaldrift In reply to PlasmaX7 [2005-03-08 21:51:00 +0000 UTC]

thanks!

with the help of a tablet it would be much easier
than it is without. but in my opinion this techique
is even very interesting for so many other parts
so that you do not really need any.

well as you can imagine one could spend
hours and hours of work on such a texture
but i think the result will get better the more
time someone spent on it.

Yeah thats true, you could make some pretty cool landscapes with that it seems. One can only imagine the results...

This is the best tutorial I've read on texture developement yet, surpasses my own by far. I rarely +fav tutorials, but this time it seems like a must. I'll be publicising this heavily in my next journal too.

thank you very much!

i'm a bit surprised and even proud that a master - like you definitely are -
likes and favs my tutorial.
was hard work to complete it and it lasted very long until i got a tutorial
and so a texture (my first one) i'm confident with.

thanks again very much!

This is an excelent improvement, it gives the ability to print out the tutorial and off screen reading.

But to come to a realy earthlike planet means even more work then this, it misses deserts, beaches, populated areas, variations in sea's and so on ...

Ofcourse when one goes off to create a planet with this kind of texture means loosing allot of details, also the spherize filter simply blows up your texture, I have been looking for a solution arround this problem but haven't realy found a good working one.

I still think this is one of the better tutorials on how to create a nice planet texture, but it should only be a guide to how to use the techniques, the real part is looking up some real satellite pictures of our planet and study on it, take a piece of paper and draw your seas and continents.

Anyway I am looking forward of seeing more from you in the future and a big thumbs up from the community

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

continentaldrift In reply to andyke [2005-01-26 12:20:44 +0000 UTC]

you are definitely right!

this is just an example of possibilities. nothing, that could be compared to reality.
i've searched and tested although a lot to find a good solution for the problem with
"shaping" the texture realistically to achive the best results.

i've got one idea i haven't tested out yet, but i'll do this this evening. if i achive a
good result i'll post a tutorial for this technique.

maybe the problem is more one part of the software (e.g. photoshop). maybe i should
search for my 3d proggs (maya) just to render a nice view of the planet before composing
it into space.
but there will be still one thing left: the fact that a lot of planets do look like "stamped"
just into the picture and do not seem to be real enough.

want to ask one question to the community: i'm planning to buy an additional software
for my composings. vue 5 by [link] (for os x). has anyone experience
with this software?

thank you very much for the props.

I have Vue 5 Infinite on my OSX, It is the best. I don't really have any deviations up that I used it for but I soon will. It's remarkable, powerful and if you use the materials right you will never get that cheap pressed texture look. With the speed of a Mac the final renders don't take days to complete.

I would recomend that you get it if you haven't.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

andyke In reply to continentaldrift [2005-01-26 20:22:03 +0000 UTC]

I am also a Vue 5 user, I like the software allot, but to be honest I haven't used it on OS X. But still I think its a great addition to graphical designers who don't get enough out of terragen.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

continentaldrift In reply to andyke [2005-01-26 21:47:53 +0000 UTC]

this might be a solution for bad looking textures
after applying the "spherize" filter to a planet.
think you already knew?!!

continentaldrift In reply to andyke [2005-01-26 20:57:13 +0000 UTC]

well, i don't expect any major differences between the windows and os x version.
i've tried out the trial version few days ago and was really excited about it.
there seem to be a lot more features than terragen ever had.
but i'll have to buy it, cause i can't anywhere find a dmg of it ! i think it's worth
buying.

hm... i'm gonna test out my idea now and will soon post an update here.
