Adoptables are basically characters up for sale. Once you bought one, you get all rights necessary to use the character like you created it on your own (although every artist sells them under different conditions; some don't allow changes to the original design or re-selling while others don't mind so you should make sure you've read the conditions just to be safe.)  Most adoptables are just the appearance of a character, others sell their own races/species or detailed sheets that even describe the character and history of the character. ..I hope this makes sense to you

Oh! That sounds like a lot of fun! So I'd have to read the rules that each artist has very carefully. I'd hate to break the rules and upset people in the process ( ; v ; )

Don't worry, the terms are usually not complicated at all! Most artist just want to make sure that you aren't just grabbing characters in order to resell them later.
