Description
Christ's descent into hell is an integral part of the Apostles' Creed.
But how is this to be understood?
The Bible and church tradition make it clear that the Lord Jesus, after dying on the cross for our sins, descended into Hades as the victor.
Centuries old Church art depicts this event in cheerful, almost funny images. The devil tries to close the gates, Christ simply blows them open and walks over him - a scene known from many cartoons, but which had its idea in church art.
For me, this image symbolizes the triumph of love and life over the power of sin and death, and thus stands for the pure joy of life.
