Description
This was from the trip to Mono Lake in 2013. Devil's Postpile National Monument. It was formed when a basalt lava cooled in a peculiar way. The phenomenon is called columnar jointing, where the lava cools into these hexagonal pillars.

It looks like they fall down a lot though, so don't stand too close!

they don't fall down very often though. What you're seeing is an accumulation built up over thousands of years. Besides, this is with a telephoto lens.
