Dogs trying for the first sledding title:
Saga owned by Coplins Kennel
Jay owned by Sterling Kennels
Aurora and Veruca owned by Rockstar Kennels .
Handler: Haan

- I'll be off now, want to join me? Haan shouted from the door.
-Where are you going? I shouted back from doing the dishes in the kitchen.
- To Lappland to title the Jaros in sledding and reindeer herding.
- WHAT?? I lost interest in the dishes and rushed to the door where Haan stood grinning, holding out my jacket.
- But, but... I stammered.
- Don't worry, said Haan, Cedrick will...
-...take care of everything! Cedrick yelled from yet another room.
Of course I didn't have much of a choice then if I wanted to get my curiosity sated so I put on my jacket and followed Haan to the van. There I saw that what I had thought was him mis-saying Jaro really was him meaning Jaros. Apart from Saga , three other jaros where loaded in the van. Jay , the beautiful jaro owned by Sterling Kennels that started my urge to own a jaro was in there. Also two of Rockstar Kennels jaros, Aurora and Veruca where along for the ride. Lastly he had brought Sammy . Sammy is a husky but when I shot Haan a wondering glance he just said "reindeer herding" and straightened that out.

Once on the road I confronted Haan about this. He was notoriously impulsive but somehow this didn't seem like an impulse. Right I was. The idea had come to Haan the moment I brought Saga home. Her wolflike feauters had made him think of a samic couple he knew in the north. They had reindeers so when Haan heard we were planning to title Saga in sledding and reindeer herding he had called them. He had also contacted the two other kennels to see if they had any jaros needing titling. He contacted the Northern Jaro breed club and got a date set when they could come inspect the titling attempt. Apparently he had prepared a special for me when it came to the equipment too. But that I didn't get to see until it was time.

A couple of hours later I stood behind a sami tent waiting for Haan's call to me that I was allowed to come around to the front. Finally it came and when I rounded the tent I squeeled in utter delight! Haan was dressed in traditional sami clothing, instead of an ordinary sled, he was sitting in a traditional "ackja" covered by a reindeer pelt. The Ackja is a boatlike sled usually drawn by one reindeer. With the jaros hitched up in it's stead it looked like it was drawn by wolves, despite Auroras curled tail. And to perfect the look Haan had altered the harnesses to sport sami colours. It was splendid!
And went splendidly too! The dogs worked like clockwork together, being guided only by Haan's voice commands.

Later Haan confessed to me he had visited Rockstar and Sterling kennels to bond and practise with the dogs.

After an unforseen awesome day we stayed the night. Tomorrow the reindeer herding trials would begin....
