Description Zuko and Katara as Hephaestus and Aphrodite, and Aang as Ares.

Now I know you all are going to want to shoot me, but read this first.

Hephaestus was born to Zeus and Hera, and being an ugly and sickly child, they threw him down to Earth, where he was raised by Thetis He became a smith and became strong in body although he was unable to walk. When Hera learned of how good he was at making jewelry, she brought him back to Olympus as the god of fire and forges. He was given Aphrodite as a wife, who often had affairs behind his back. Even so, he often gave her beautiful jewelry, including a golden girdle which made her even more beautiful and irresistible to men.

Aphrodite, the goddess of love, was born out of the sea and her parents are unknown. She was given to Hephaestus partially to resolve infighting over her. Bored by the the ugly Hephaestus she began an affair with his brother Ares, the god of war.

Now I know this isn't the perfect Zutara fit. Fuck its hardly even Zutara, but bear with me. I have a point.

Zuko reminded me a lot of Hephaestus. An unwilling outcast with a lot of pride on the outside, but a lot of love inside. (Despite knowledge of her constant cheating, Hephaestus kept Aphrodite as his wife.)

This is particularly poignant not in the sense that Katara is actually cheating on Zuko, but that he is trying to win her over and make her trust him. Katara, who has no reason to love or trust him, ignores him (or teases him mercilessly, like in the show.)

Aang isn't so much the god of war, Ares (quite the opposite actually) but is mostly there as a representation of where Katara's loyalties lie (and also Ares was Aphrodite's most infamous lover)

I think this piece shows a lot of the real "canon" Zutara: unsure and strained.

(and god did it take me forever to finish this piece....)

I really like this, but I can't help but correct you. In some versions Aphrodite was Zeus's daughter, but in the version you're using her father would be Ouranus. When Kronos castrated Ouranus, he threw the genitals into the sea, and from the aphros (sea foam) Aphrodite rose, fully grown.

Anywho, interesting concept. I like it.

Aphrodite's father was Uranus. Uranus was castrated and had his testes thrown into the ocean by Cronus, creating Aphrodite.

Ah really? I hadn't heard that part.

Great introduction though: "Hi, my name is Aphrodite and I was made from my father's balls."

Well, technically, we are all made from our fathers' balls. But, ya, it is weird.

The interpretation is pefect. I always see these kinds of pictures where Aang is the hurt one. Sad, but refreshing to see this. The Zutaraang Triangle always did intrigue me.

Well I try to be a Zutarian of no particular bias against Kataang, so I'm glad you liked it. I COULD have made it more pro-Zutarian, but the idea just stuck too hard.
The Zutara/Kataang ship wars are a very scary thing.

artbyamandalauren In reply to CoppeliaD [2008-12-25 21:33:38 +0000 UTC]

I agree. It's the kind of pictures I think both ships can appreciate. And that's nice of you not to be so biased.

CoppeliaD In reply to artbyamandalauren [2008-12-26 17:23:42 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't know. I haven't had too many Kataangers see this piece. PROBABLY because its marked for Zutara Week, etc.

I realized, after going to SDCC and meeting all the Avatar fans I met there, that it was rather pointless to be so diehard about it. I do have my reasons why its not my number one ship, but I'll just state them and not make a big fuss if anyone asks.

artbyamandalauren In reply to CoppeliaD [2008-12-29 16:57:45 +0000 UTC]

YEah, It's not worth arguing about.

We should just appreciate both ships for what they are.

Lol it's hardly Zutara (as we Zutarians love it) at all though, once you think about it.

But I have my ways....

Wow, that's so good! When I first saw that you made Zuko Hephaestus I was a bit confused, since she Aphrodite didn't really love him, but after reading your explanation it makes so much sense! And I love the way you drew them, katara looks so much like the goddes of beauty, I couldn't think of a better way to draw her. And zuko... pour guy, he looks so helpless... Love his expression.

Great story, and, of course, great art - it does describe canon Zutara, like you said.
Well-done! I especially like Zuko's profile, hehehe.
