Description
Go Firebolt!...and bad me, so slow to finish this right at the deadline, just like the last picture...I shouldn't enter contests.
Here you see Firebolt competing in the Devil's Cup 2009 at *Jullelin 's Rosendal Track.
Behold the overly-muscled and super-shiny Firebolt.
And don't even let me get started on how awful the jockey looks.
That dirt gave me a hard time too, I just can't get it right. In all these competition tracks and arenas I draw it and it always looks wrong. This was even worse because I did it once and then my computer froze and it wasn't saved.
EDIT: story's here!
Firebolt steeped proudly onto the track, lifting each foot high with his characteristic barely contained energy. His fiery red tail danced in time to his eager trot and his ears swivelled alertly to catch the excited cries of the crowd as they looked over the horses who would soon test themselves in the long awaited Devil’s Cup. Alex Forge, Firebolt’s long-time jockey, looked at the other horses appreciatively(and in some cases bewilderedly; he was not used to these fantastic creatures), but his mount’s gaze was focused on one thing alone: the starting gate the rose before them on the freshly-raked track. He was ready to race. The tense atmosphere was like an elixir to him, and he soaked it up with confidence. Even in the paddock he had caught the atmosphere and launched into his usual pre-race routine: flexing his powerful neck and arching it like a dressage horse to capture the crowd’s attention and intimidate the other horses. Alex could help smiling as he held back the big colt so they could approach the gate.
Firebolt pawed the dirt under his hooves in frustration as the other horses were loaded. He sidestepped and snorted when one refused to enter the gate, but Alex breathed a sigh of relief when he decided it was not worth his time to throw a fit and entered the gate smoothly. As the doors snapped shut behind him, Firebolt flicked his ears toward the track ahead, his flanks quivering. The smooth stretch of track ahead beckoned to him like a blank paper, ready from him to write his name upon it for all the world to read. It was a challenge.
There was a roar as the gate burst open, and Firebolt let his muscles uncoil with explosive power as he strove to get ahead of his opponents. He sprang toward the inside of the track, driving to take up his customary position at the front of the pack, but there were many horses between him and the rail and he had to accelerate quickly to get ahead of them and take the lead. Alex kept a tight grip on the reins, knowing he would have to keep a careful balance so that the red colt would not blow his energy on the early race, or wear himself down fighting his jockey. They had a long way to go, and many champions to contend with.
Despite his frustration with Alex, Firebolt knew he could gain the lead as he charged to the front of the pack with deadly determination. Many horses thundered on his heels as struggled to keep his position, but the others were eager to challenge his lead. He dug in with his hooves and battled on, his long stride eating up the ground. There was still a long way to go, and the outcome was far from decided, but Firebolt knew one thing was certain: no matter what happened, he would give them a race to remember.

In his mind, no horse can match him and want everyone to know it. In tougher races this confidence can sometimes lead to mistakes, but no one can say he doesn't try his very best. Firebolt is sometimes difficult to handle, and enjoys making people around him nervous.
History: Firebolt did not begin racing until he was three years old, and unfortunately missed some important races he might have won as a consequence. This did give him the chance to build up his strength and determination however, and he went on to run brilliantly.

Woo woo woo woo wait a second... YOU DIDN'T WIN THE RACE awwww, must of been a camera mistake! Firebolt probably raced so fast past the finish line the camera didn't take the picture and Firebolt had to race around the track again, but it was too late, he almost caught up. Bad stamina, everyone hates it
This is amazing!! Did Firebolt win any race? Probably did, probably like 20 or so, just didn't want to show it off by putting it on Deviantart
LOL anyways you deserved to win! This is amazing!! I love it!

No, he didn't win, but he was racing against the best horses in HARPG so he still did well. Haha, I like your camera idea! Maybe that is really what happened...
Firebolt hasn't won any races held by other people on dA, but I'm pretending he won some races I based on real life races, which I'll hopefully draw sometime. Thank you!

I love the detail in this. The attention to the muscles is really phenomenal; even the jockey's clothing is superbly shaded. Although I will concur, there's something slightly off about the face.
It seems that the eyes are actually set too far apart, and angled a little oddly for, well..the angle of the head, lol.
My only other qualm about the face is the "angle" of the muzzle. It seems to face more towards me (the viewer) than the rest of the head does... although I think the only thing that gives it this awkward appearance is that one small line on the left side of the nose bridge, that curves inwards and towards the right.
I was tinkering, and here's what I came up with:
VISUAL EXAMPLES:
Side-by-side view
Animated .gif (overlay)
Explanation: First of all, I pushed the right eye (our right) in, so that it was more centered. Then, I sorta smooshed the right side of the face - past the bridge of the nose - in. The reason I did this was because realistically, in this position, we wouldn't see quite as much of the right side of the face as we would the left.
Also, instead of enlarging the nostrils, I actually smooshed the lips up (vertically), which gives the nostrils a wider appearance.
Lastly, a small detail, but I actually took the one defining line of the nose bridge that pointed inward (to our left, and to the left side of the horses face - see gif) and angled it so that it followed the curve of the rest of the face.
I know this deviation is quite a few months old, but I figured I'd throw in some constructive criticism to try and help solve the dilemma! x)
Hope I was of some help.

Thank you very much! I'm glad you like my picture, and it means even more that you took the time to help me improve on it.
Looking again, I have to agree about the eyes being too far apart. Placing the horse's eyes is still one of my weaknesses, but I think you're right. The way you brought in the right eye and side of the face does seem to work really well, it fits the angle much better and makes his head look less blocky.
Your adjustment of the lines on the left of the nose bridge seems to work better too. I placed that line quite awkwardly before, and the shading above the nostrils makes it look strange as well. I think I was going for some kind of tapered effect, but real horses don't even have that!
Shortening the lips is great idea to improve their proportion to the nostrils. However, I can't help but feel changing the mouth would take too much character away from the face, so if I were to rework this I would be more likely to just rework the nostrils or draw new ones.
Thanks again for all your help! I really appreciate it, and you have certainly given me a new take on these problems that seemed so frustrating. It has really brightened my day to receive this thoughtful comment.
